About The Position

The Dental Hygienist promotes dental health and provides direct provision of oral hygiene and appropriate preventive services to dental patients. This position is located at Sunrise's Student Health Center on Aims Community College Campus in Greeley, CO. This position's patient population will consist of students of all ages and the community.

Requirements

  • Associates (A.A) Degree from a Community College or Technical school in dental hygiene
  • License to practice oral hygiene in the state of Colorado.
  • 1-2 years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare treatment room for patient by adhering to prescribed procedures and protocols.
  • Prepare patient for dental hygiene treatment by welcoming, soothing, and seating patient.
  • Maintain instrumentation for dental hygiene treatment by sharpening, sterilizing, and selecting instruments.
  • Select materials and equipment for dental hygiene visit by evaluating patient’s oral health.
  • Recognize status of patient’s periodontal health and delivers the appropriate treatment based on the treatment plan.
  • Complete dental prophylaxis by cleaning deposits and stains from teeth and from beneath gum margins.
  • Detect disease by completing oral cancer screening; feeling and visually examining gums; using probes to locate periodontal disease and to assess levels of recession; exposing and developing radiographic studies.
  • Prevent dental decay by applying fluorides and other cavity preventing agents.
  • Maintain patient appearance and ability to chew by fabricating temporary restorations, cleaning and polishing removable appliances, placing, carving, and finishing amalgam restorations, removing cement from crowns and bridges.
  • Assist dentist with dental and medical emergencies.
  • Educate patients by giving oral hygiene and plaque control instructions and postoperative instructions, providing reminders of time of next dental hygiene visit.
  • Initiate oral hygiene instruction with all patients during course of treatment.
  • Properly refer abnormal findings to appropriate provider.  (i.e., undiagnosed hypertension to MD, leukoplakic oral lesion to DDS).
  • Notify DDS of patients who fail to respond to initial therapy appropriately and thereby may need chemotherapeutic or surgical intervention.
  • Document dental hygiene services by recording vital signs and medical and dental histories, charting in patient records.
  • Follow clinic protocol with reviewing patient’s medical history at every appointment and records changes.
  • Maintain dental supplies inventory by checking stock to determine inventory level, anticipating needed supplies placing and expediting orders for supplies, verifying receipt of supplies.
  • Follow clinic radiographic protocol and produces diagnostic radiographs.
