About The Position

Under general supervision, is responsible for performing prophylactic and other preventive dental services in the Health Department, as authorized by the State Dental Practice Act. Working conditions are primarily in a medical environment. May be exposed to infectious diseases. Must be willing to comply with all OSHA regulations and current immunization policies. May exercise direct supervision over assigned staff. This position is a "grant funded" position, therefore unclassified and has no disciplinary appeal rights to the Municipal Civil Service Commission. This position is likewise subject to at-will employment status and can be terminated at any time for any reason. The San Antonio Metro Health District (SAMHD) provides public health services to clients, which may include risk for exposure to and possible transmission of vaccine-preventable diseases. Staff in high-risk positions will be required to obtain relevant immunizations, per SAMHD Policy DM 13.2. Review and consideration will be given to requests for exemption from this policy. Requirements

  • Graduation from a recognized school or college of dental hygiene accredited by the Commission on Dental Accreditation and approved by the Board with a degree in dental hygiene. No substitution for education is allowed.
  • Valid Class "C" Texas Driver's License or the ability to obtain a valid Class "C" Texas Driver's License within thirty (30) days after becoming a resident of the State of Texas.
  • Certified by the Texas State Board of Dental Examiners to apply pit and fissure sealants.
  • Knowledge of dental terminology.
  • Knowledge of dental hygiene treatments, practices and techniques.
  • Knowledge of dental office practices and procedures.
  • Knowledge of dental cleaning instruments and equipment.
  • Knowledge of dental office record keeping and safety practices and procedures.
  • Knowledge of sanitation and sterilization techniques and procedures.
  • Knowledge of dental radiographic techniques.
  • Skill in utilizing a personal computer and associate software programs.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively.
  • Ability to handle difficult clients, including small children.
  • Ability to assist the Public Health Dentist in routine and comprehensive dental procedures.
  • Ability to conduct prescreening interviews with patients.
  • Ability to develop and mount intraoral radiographic film.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with City staff and the general public.
  • Ability to perform basic office clerical functions, including maintaining patient health records.
  • Ability to assist in general dental procedures.
  • Ability to perform all the physical requirements of the position with or without accommodations.

Nice To Haves

  • Three (3) years of experience working in an oral health program that serves children in community and school settings.
  • Bilingual in English and Spanish.

Responsibilities

  • Places dental sealants and fluoride varnish applications on teeth.
  • Conducts educational presentations for the prevention and control of dental diseases to children and parents, individually and in groups.
  • Maintains dental treatment equipment, instruments, and supplies.
  • Maintains accurate records of services rendered and submits reports on activities.
  • Provides oral health training to community partners.
  • Assists families in finding additional resources to care.
  • Orders clinical supplies and monitors inventory.
  • Maintains working relationship with community partners.
  • Coordinates community health events.
  • May provide supervision of support staff.
  • May assist in setting up clinic schedule.
  • May assist in the preparation of clinical budgets and reports.
  • Performing preventative dental services requires communicating and educating with presentations and training the community, operates dentistry and basic office equipment, sitting, standing, reaching, walking, twisting, and kneeling such as when maintaining dental treatment equipment, instruments, and supplies.
  • Performs related duties and fulfill responsibilities as required.
