Responsible for overseeing clinical patient care in an organized and motivating manner, guiding, monitoring and evaluating student learning in the laboratory and clinical setting to ensure entry-level competence into the Dental Hygiene Profession. Responsible for responding to students as distinct individuals with varied interests, needs, and abilities. This program mixes classroom, laboratory and clinical experience to prepare our students for their new careers as Dental Hygienists. These schedules vary to meet the needs of our students' schedules. Clinical Assignments - Each assignment is for 11-week Quarters and will take place on-site at our brand-new Dental Clinic. You may be assigned 1-2 sections per term depending on availability. The days and times for each clinical appointment will vary by quarter, but you can expect 4-4.5 hour shifts in the morning, afternoon, or evening hours. Classroom Assignments - Class assignments are made on an 11-week Quarters and may meet between two and four days a week Monday thru Friday. Classes can meet in either mornings or afternoons.

Requirements

  • Associate’s Degree in Dental Hygiene from an accredited college or university and experience in the dental setting or a Bachelor’s Degree in Dental Hygiene.
  • Dental Hygiene License – State of Tennessee or the ability to obtain a Tennessee License
  • Current CPR Certification
  • Administration of Local Anesthesia Certification
  • Nitrous Oxide Certification
  • 3 to 5 years of dental hygiene experience

  • Master's or second degree(s) in Dental Hygiene or a related Health Care or Education area

Responsibilities

  • Meet all scheduled clinics and laboratory sessions and be fully prepared for each class meeting.
  • Evaluate students’ work thoroughly and equitably.
  • Keep informed of current educational trends, both in general and in one’s specific field.
  • Understand the student group being served and work toward improving students’ skills.
  • Actively engage in the South College assessment of student learning initiatives and complete assigned assessment activities.
  • Participate in departmental meetings including calibration, curriculum development and review, as well as staffing for students of concern.
  • Keep accurate records, maintain course syllabi, and post grades according to South College schedules.
  • Report to appropriate personnel problems involving students needing special academic or personal assistance.
  • Attend all meetings and training appropriate to the assigned position.
  • Adhere to the South College philosophy and the policies/procedures of the College.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Chair of Dental Education.
