About The Position

This is a supervisory position that performs under the direct supervision of the Dentist, supervising, motivating, training and evaluating dental assistants. This individual will be responsible for all supervisory duties including, but not limited to, hiring and selection, developing performance plans, conducting performance appraisals, planning and directing their work, approving leave and taking disciplinary action as appropriate. Supervises work priorities and scheduling of daily clinics, assigning workload based on capability and clinic requirements. Directs work of dental assistants to insure maximum use of time. Supervises the overall operation of the dental clinic including scheduling patients’ appointments as needed. Assists in interviewing and selecting dental assistants. Trains and supervises other dental assistants in procedures, methods, use of equipment and properties of material. Assists in development of teaching aids, making continuing education available and encouraging dental assistants to acquire new skills. Assists dentist in the treatment of patients. The position also involves applying public health competencies in various domains including analytical/assessment, policy development/program planning, communication, cultural competency, community dimensions of practice, public health sciences, financial planning and management, and leadership and systems thinking.

Requirements

  • Graduate of a dental assistant program approved by the Florida Board of Dentistry or accredited by the American Dental Association Commission on Dental accreditation
  • Five or more years as a dental assistant
  • Knowledge of dental equipment, instruments and supplies, basic dental terminology.
  • Ability to perform routine dental laboratory work, supervise people, determine work priorities, assign work and ensure proper completion of work assignments.
  • Ability to maintain accurate records, prepare reports, communicate effectively, and maintain effective working relationships with others.
  • Technical dental assisting skills; organizational and planning skills; self-direction and self-motivation; and human relations skills.
  • Ability to frequently bend, kneel, reach, and sit or stand for long periods of time.
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds as needed.

  • Making preliminary impressions for study casts and occlusal registrations for mounting study casts.
  • Pouring, trimming, and polishing study casts.
  • Cleaning and polishing removable appliances.
  • Fabricating temporary restorations and custom impressions from preliminary impressions.
  • Placing and removing rubber dams and matrices.
  • Placing temporary restorations.
  • Placing dental sealants.
  • Instructing patients in oral hygiene and plaque control programs.
  • Removing sutures.
  • Scheduling appointments, preparing bills and receiving payment for dental services, completing insurance forms, and maintaining records, manually or using computer.
  • Maintaining supply inventory.
  • Ordering supplies.
  • Performing routine equipment maintenance and repair.
  • Ensuring clinic follows OSHA and ADA guidelines.
  • Providing written reports to the Dental Administration Office.
  • Completing all mandatory training as required by supervisor.
  • Motivating colleagues to achieve program and organizational goals by participating in clinic team meetings and respecting different points of view.
  • Using performance management systems for program and organizational improvement to meet productivity standards.
  • Monitoring productivity reports and if necessary, working with the Senior Dentist to improve productivity for the clinic and ensure that the productivity criteria and measures are met as set by the Dental Program in terms of number of patients per hour, RVU, or both on a monthly average.
  • Monitoring program budget.
  • Reviewing staff EARs weekly and approving leave and time sheets in People First biweekly on Thursdays or weekly for any OPS staff.
  • Completing or ensuring that Superbills for each patient are completed at the end of each service 100% of the time.
  • Completing and submitting People First time sheets biweekly on Thursdays and EARs weekly 100% of the time.
  • Attending and completing 100% of FDOH-Duval mandatory training by the specified deadlines.
  • Performing other related duties as required.
