About The Position

The Deli Clerk is responsible for providing an exceptional shopping experience for customers by preparing hot and cold beverages, sandwiches, wraps, and other food items. This role involves maintaining a clean and organized workstation, adhering to strict sanitation and food handling procedures, merchandising products, and assisting customers with product selection and inquiries. The Deli Clerk also plays a role in training new employees, participating in cross-training, and contributing to the overall efficiency and quality of the department's operations.

Requirements

  • Outstanding customer service and communication skills.
  • Excellent communication skills and willingness to work as part of a team.
  • Knowledge and experience working in food service.
  • Possesses SERV Safe or Food Handlers certification, or able to obtain within first month of employment.
  • Ability to work accurately and quickly in a fast-paced deli and bakery environment to meet timelines and goals.
  • Ability to operate all equipment necessary to perform the job.
  • Knowledge and ability to work all service shifts, as needed.
  • Ability to read and comprehend instructions and recipes.
  • Knowledge and understanding of dietary and measurement abbreviations.
  • Analytical ability and proficiency in math.
  • Ability to understand and adhere to all organizational and department rules, policies, and procedures.
  • Ability to work on a variety of tasks simultaneously, prioritize and remain flexible.
  • Works well independently but able to work closely and cooperatively with others.
  • Strong attention to detail and organizational skills.
  • Knowledge of natural foods industry.

Responsibilities

  • Provide an exceptional shopping experience and friendly and welcoming environment for all members, customers, and co-workers.
  • Greet and interact with customers, ensuring they receive prompt, helpful, attentive, and authentically friendly service.
  • Assist customers in locating products and seek opportunities to exceed expectations.
  • Maintain a calm and friendly demeanor with all customers and employees/co-workers.
  • Investigate and respond to customer questions and requests promptly, escalating to management when necessary.
  • Prepare hot and cold beverages, sandwiches, wraps, salad dressings, dips, spreads, and other items according to established procedures.
  • Safely perform service production using correct equipment, including grabbing and going, cutting, wrapping, weighing, packaging, and pricing items.
  • Understand food allergies and special diets to assist customers in selecting appropriate foods and products.
  • Merchandise and stock cases, shelves, and displays with fresh, high-quality product.
  • Ensure all prepared foods cases are clean, stocked, rotated, and appealing to customers.
  • Pull expired product based on sell-by date, time, temperature, and quality guidelines, and accurately record spoilage.
  • Receive and process special orders, ensuring timely and accurate preparation and production.
  • Assist in new employee on-the-job training through job shadowing and orientation.
  • Participate in cross-training by training others and learning other department job functions.
  • Maintain a clean and organized workstation, including washing dishware and sanitizing equipment.
  • Maintain dishwashing station and equipment in good condition.
  • Maintain department appearance by cleaning cases, facing product, ensuring accurate signage, cleaning shelves, displays, and coolers, and keeping floors clear.
  • Maintain backstock and work area cleanliness, including sweeping, mopping, washing dishes, sanitizing equipment, and organizing inventory.
  • Receive product deliveries, ensuring order and invoice accuracy, and processing invoices for credits.
  • Learn to place orders from suppliers and place orders as assigned.
  • Perform all tasks accurately, efficiently, and free of errors according to department procedure.
  • Consistently perform tasks at an acceptable rate and quality.
  • Organize time efficiently, prioritize, maintain focus, and stay productive.
  • Achieve established goals and expected results for the department.
  • Become familiar with products carried throughout all departments and their locations.
  • Answer phones, route calls, and take messages.
  • Develop knowledge of the Co-op’s membership structure and explain membership benefits.
  • Regularly check mailbox and/or email for company communications and review posted memos.
  • Assist in other departments, inventory counts, store-wide cleaning, and perform other duties as assigned.
  • Follow all procedures in sanitation and safe food handling per California Health and Safety Code requirements.
  • Communicate and document any equipment maintenance and/or safety concerns to department management.
