This role involves performing general decontamination work, decontaminating equipment and facilities, handling and packaging radioactive waste, and conducting routine contamination checks. It also includes inspecting and testing containers, overpacks, and performing shipping and receiving operations for radioactive products. This position is classified as a Nuclear Energy Worker (NEW), meaning there is a reasonable probability of receiving a radiation dose exceeding the public limit.

Requirements

  • Must have grade 12 or equivalent.
  • Minimum of one-year experience as a Decontamination Operator or Shipper.
  • Availability to work the required shift(s) and overtime.
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 10kgs on a frequent basis.
  • Good manual dexterity and grip strength.
  • Must be able to lift heavy objects and operate heavy lifting equipment.
  • Ability to push/pull carts with a force of up to 25kgs on an occasional basis.
  • Ability to wear a respirator for potentially several hours at a time.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare all outgoing shipments of radioactive and non-radioactive materials including labeling, marking, sealing, final closure and loading in accordance with established procedures and regulations.
  • Receive incoming shipments of radioactive and non-radioactive materials.
  • Perform daily cleaning, inspection and testing of containers, inserts and overpacks.
  • Carry out routine and special technical tests and inspections on every container prior to shipment and issue work orders for repair and maintenance if required.
  • Perform general and specific decontamination work as directed – to include decontamination of equipment, facilities, surfaces, tools and packaging.
  • Handle and package radioactive waste.
  • Perform routine contamination checks and monitoring of protective clothing.
  • Perform cleaning, inspection and testing of containers, overpacks.
  • Perform routine and special operations with respect to the shipping and receiving of radioactive products to customers.
  • Inspect shipping containers and control the shipping/receiving area.
