About The Position

The Deckhand plays a crucial role in maintaining the security and cleanliness of the vessel's exterior and secured areas while also serving passengers. This role is responsible for handling lines, collecting fares, assisting the captain, and ensuring passenger safety at all times aboard the vessel. This entry-level position performs duties related to passenger safety, passenger service and vessel operations in addition to preventative maintenance and vessel sanitation duties.

Requirements

  • Pass a drug screening as well as be enrolled in a random D.O.T. drug screening program.
  • Climb stairs and ladders
  • Lift, carry, push or pull 50 lbs.
  • Ability to stand, walk, bend, rotate and reach frequently, manipulate/handle/grip materials, and maneuver through/in/around small and/or close-quarters areas of the vessel
  • Must be able to maintain both static and dynamic balance to complete various job duties.
  • Vision correctable to 20/40 with color vision and no night blindness.
  • Work as a team player
  • Understand and follow oral and written instructions, including the Employee Handbook, Standard Operating Procedures (SOP), Safety Management System (SMS), and crew qualification binders.
  • Comply with rules and regulations contained in the Handbook and as directed by the Captain and/or General Manager including, but not limited to: Report to work on time and ready for duty; Depart the vessel(s) only when properly relieved; Ensure that the proper uniform is worn and grooming standards are met; Complete required administrative forms clearly and accurately, including Accident/Incident Reports and any/all other required HR forms/processes

  • Prefer candidates with sailing or boating experience.

Responsibilities

  • Maintains the cleanliness of all outer decks including furniture, windows, handrails, vessel signs, displays, etc.
  • Assists the Captain with repairs and maintenance of the vessel.
  • Acts as a lookout for the Captain.
  • Assists passengers onto and off of the vessel, and retain firm control of the process and order of passenger onboarding and debarking.
  • Participates in safety and training drills and exercises.
  • Handles lines, doors, gates, and shipboard equipment in a safe manner.
  • Complete all required logs.
  • Inspect safety equipment to verify location, condition, and markings are in compliance with USCG requirements; assist USCG in annual inspections of safety equipment; and enforce safety and USCG navigational laws
  • Report safety related concerns.
  • Respond to all General Alarms and emergency situations per station bill.
  • Notify the Captain immediately of any disputes or problems with passengers while remaining respectful and professional at all times.
  • Assist as directed with other shipboard tasks and duties.
