About The Position
The State Veterinarian role with the Department of Agriculture is a great chance to support the health and safety of horses at Presque Isle Downs. Requirements
- Graduation from a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine or Veterinary Medical Doctor program.
- Possession of a valid license to practice veterinary medicine as issued by a State Board of Veterinary Medical Examiners.
- Possession of a Commission Employee License
- Must be able to perform essential job functions.
Responsibilities
- Supervise sample collection, manage records, and guide personnel in the post race detention barn
- Review eligible horses, supervise staff, and oversee proper administration of bleeder medication
- Conduct examinations of ship in horses and ensure accurate documentation of findings
- Observe horses in the paddock, during racing, and at the finish line to evaluate condition
- Assess horses for respiratory bleeding, manage the Veterinarian's List, and administer emergency care when needed
- Attend hearings and resolve issues related to horse qualification for bleeder medication
