About The Position

Starting Arts runs approximately 45 shows annually, with 75% being simplified "Cafeteria" shows in elementary-middle school cafeterias and 25% being "In-House" productions in professional theater venues requiring intense set and tech design. The Deck Crew member supports the technical needs of theatrical productions, ensuring smooth operation of equipment and systems during rehearsals and performances. This role involves collaboration with youth performers, directors, designers, and other production staff. Responsibilities may include assistance with lighting setup/operation, sound setup/operation, and set load-in/load-out. Productions are staged in diverse venues, from cafeterias to large theaters.

Requirements

• Familiarity with lighting, sound, and stage equipment is essential.
• Strong problem-solving skills and ability to troubleshoot technical issues in real time.
• Knowledge of theater safety protocols and equipment handling.
• Ability to work in a fast-paced, dynamic environment with a strong attention to detail.
• Ability to work with children in a friendly, approachable, and efficient manner.
• Must be able to lift heavy equipment (up to 25 lbs), climb ladders, and work in various physical conditions (including above stage level or in confined spaces).
• Must be available to work afternoons, evenings, weekends, and holidays.
• Availability Monday mornings for Load Ins would be great!
• Ability to work as part of a team and independently when needed.
• Ability to work with youth aged from elementary through high school.

Nice To Haves

• Previous experience in theater production, stage operations, or a technical role is preferred.
• Experience working with children is preferred.

Responsibilities

• Assist with the setup and strike of scenery, lighting, sound, and props before and after performances, including pre-setting scenic elements and preparing wireless microphones.
• Maintain smooth transitions between scenes, handling cues for set changes, lights, sound, and other technical elements.
• Report any potential problems to the Supervisor on site, usually the Technical Director, Production Manager, or the Director of the production.
• Help manage the youth performers backstage, ensuring their safety and compliance with SA’s protocols.
• Assist with the arrangement of technical needs, including lighting, sound, and scenic elements during the move into the theatre.
• Assist with the removal and loading of technical needs back onto the truck and into Starting Arts storage.
