About The Position

Under the direction of the Principal, this employee is responsible for supporting the planning and implementation of organizational procedures, promoting an effective learning environment, and keeping the Principal informed of emerging issues. This role involves dealing with student issues, assisting in staff supervision and development, managing student growth and progress, maintaining records, and coordinating student activities to ensure a safe and orderly environment. The Dean also assists in implementing school plans, enforcing policies, communicating with parents, and supporting district and state policies. Additionally, this role involves coordinating test plans, assisting with business operations, monitoring facilities, and serving as the chief administrator in the Principal's absence.

Requirements

  • Knowledge of school students’ development.
  • Knowledge of procedures, methods, and strategies pertaining to school operation.
  • Knowledge of state standards, curriculum, and instruction; safety procedures.
  • Knowledge of effective discipline, campus supervision, and control methods.
  • Knowledge of program and activity evaluation strategies and procedures.
  • Knowledge of education law, local policies, and state and federal laws relating to minors.
  • Knowledge of technology.
  • Knowledge of methods and procedures of supervision and evaluation.
  • Knowledge of current educational theories and practices.
  • Demonstrated skill in participatory management, shared decision-making, and school and program planning.
  • Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing; establish and maintain positive working relationships.
  • Ability to plan, organize, and coordinate the management functions and activities of the assigned school.
  • Ability to demonstrate outstanding leadership.
  • Ability to be flexible.
  • Ability to analyze and define problems and issues, collect data, establish facts, and draw conclusions to develop appropriate solutions.

  • Must be able to physically perform the basic life operational functions of climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, lifting, grasping, talking, hearing, and repetitive motions.
  • Must be able to perform medium work exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to lift objects.
  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear.
  • The employee is frequently required to stand and walk.
  • The employee is occasionally required to sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls; and climb or balance.
  • Must possess the visual acuity to operate required equipment and motor vehicles.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
  • Minimum of a Bachelor’s degree in the education area from a regionally accredited college/university.
  • Licensed as a teacher, counselor, or administrator in North Carolina.
  • Minimum of five successful years as a classroom teacher, with ratings of “proficient”/”at standard” or higher on the NC Educator Evaluation System and no letters of reprimand on file in the last three years.

Responsibilities

  • Deals with student issues in cooperation with the Principal, Teachers, and other support staff.
  • Assists in screening, selecting, supervising, and evaluating the performance of licensed staff with an abbreviated evaluation status, itinerant/elective teachers, and classified staff members; motivates employee performance and enhances morale.
  • Assists in planning, organizing, and implementing staff development and training; encourages and supports professional growth for all staff members; participates in his/her own professional growth.
  • Assists in managing students in such a way as to encourage their optimal growth and make periodic appraisals of their progress; advises, counsels, and assists instructional, support, and ancillary personnel in problem-solving activities pertaining to student performance and behavior to determine appropriate solutions.
  • Maintains detailed records of support provided to students and teachers.
  • Assists in the planning, scheduling, and supervision of student activities such as lunch, class changes, assemblies, concerts, dances, sporting events, and parent engagement events to maintain a safe and orderly environment.
  • Assists in the planning and implementation of school plans and organizational procedures for the health, safety, discipline, and conduct of the students.
  • Enforces school district and school policies and procedures (except out-of-school suspensions).
  • Maintains effective communication with parents, building positive home-school relationships.
  • Assists the Principal in communications between the central administration and the site, and interprets, supports, and implements district and state policies and procedures.
  • Coordinates the development, implementation, and maintenance of effective test plans and procedures that meet the expectations of district and state testing standards.
  • Assists in the responsibility for the operational effectiveness of the school, including planning, supervising, and directing the business operation of the school in accordance with district policies and procedures.
  • Assists in monitoring and supervision of facilities to ensure a safe and orderly environment.
  • Serves as the chief administrator in the absence of the Principal.
  • Other duties as assigned.
