About The Position

The Dean of Students works with the Principal in carrying out the school’s discipline and behavior programs. As a professional educator, the Dean Students understand and respond to the challenges presented by today’s diverse student population. Dean of Students provides proactive leadership to engage all stakeholders in the delivery of programs and services to support the students’ academic achievement, personal and social development. Dean of Students works cooperatively with the principal, counselor, nurse, staff, students and parents towards a positive school climate.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s degree preferred
  • Minimum of two years of exemplary teaching
  • Teaching certificate preferred
  • Belief in and commitment to the mission and core values of SST Schools.
  • Demonstrated leadership with the ability to lead people and get results through work with others.
  • Ability to prioritize and manage multiple tasks with a willingness to be flexible when needed.

Responsibilities

  • Investigates and resolve all discipline problems in a fair and just manner
  • Investigate student complaints and grievances.
  • Interviews students and witnesses in disciplinary investigations.
  • Investigate, adjudicate, and monitor minor infractions of the school code in the form of progressive disciplines such as detentions, classroom referrals, Saturday detention, and in-school suspension.
  • Maintains disciplinary records required by policy, regulation, law, or good practice.
  • Presents the school’s case in due process proceedings for suspension and expulsion.
  • Develops and administers disciplinary procedures in accordance with district policies and state laws; receives referrals and confers with students, parents, teachers, community agencies, and law enforcement; responds to and resolves parent, student, and staff concerns and complaints; serves on discipline or expulsion panels as assigned.
  • Supervises students on campus before and after school; monitors students during lunch, recess, passing periods, and other activities; instructs students in appropriate behavior; disciplines students in accordance with established guidelines.
  • Works with the Principal to establish a safe and secure learning environment for students.
  • Develops plans for emergency situations in collaboration with other administrators, staff, and public safety agencies; directs the work of yard duty staff and crossing guards; plans and debriefs emergency drills; updates the school safety plan.
  • Prepares and maintains a variety of district, county, state, and federal records and reports; directs preparation of records and reports by staff.
  • Participates in administrative meetings and training to improve administrative skills; maintains current knowledge of the district’s adopted curriculum.
  • Provides and maintains appropriate communication with family and community, including law enforcement agencies and the judicial systems.
  • Works with the community and government agencies on problems relating to drug abuse and truancy
  • Serves as liaison between the school and home
  • Serves as liaison between the school and juvenile court
  • Represents the school system at community meetings and conferences
  • Participate in the creating and implementing of the campus's emergency evacuation and preparedness plan
  • Mentor and council at-risk students and students in need of additional staff support
