About The Position

The Dean of Arts & Sciences at Mount Mary University is responsible for advancing the university's mission and values by providing leadership, fostering collaboration, and ensuring the financial viability of academic programs. This role requires a deep understanding of diversity, equity, and inclusion practices, as well as strong skills in strategic planning, budget management, and external relationship building. The Dean will work closely with faculty, staff, and university administration to support programmatic accreditation, identify donor prospects and grant opportunities, and advocate for the School of Arts & Sciences.

Requirements

  • A PhD or terminal degree that aligns with a discipline or profession included in the School of Arts & Sciences.
  • A record of excellence in teaching, service, and professional development that meets criteria established by Mount Mary University.
  • Extensive knowledge and practice of diversity, equity, and inclusive excellence pedagogies that create a sense of belonging for all students, faculty, and staff.
  • A minimum of five years of exemplary administrative experience in higher education.
  • Exceptional written, oral, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Ability to manage stress with multiple competing priorities while maintaining a positive attitude and effect.
  • Self-motivated and self-directed to design and complete complex projects in a timely manner.
  • Outstanding skills in critical and creative thinking, as well as independent decision making.
  • Evidence of the ability to establish external relationships that strengthen academic programming.
  • Ability to conduct financial analyses and interpret a wide array of institutional data.
  • Understanding of general accounting principles to manage budgets and ensure fiscal responsibility.

Responsibilities

  • Provides collaborative support to Division Chairs and faculty through collegial, transparent communication.
  • Leads the School of Arts & Sciences in strategic planning initiatives focusing on accreditation, curriculum development, enrollment growth, retention, and cost-effectiveness.
  • Utilizes and interprets institutional metrics to ensure academic quality and program integrity.
  • Works with Division Chairs to develop and manage budgets, ensuring the fiscal responsibility of the School.
  • Serves as a visible leader, developing relationships with corporate and community partners for internships and applied academic opportunities.
  • Seeks fundraising and grant opportunities in collaboration with relevant university offices and faculty.
  • Facilitates innovative change by partnering with academic programs to leverage discipline-specific expertise.
  • Promotes interdisciplinary collaboration with other Schools to enhance core curriculum and offerings.
  • Collaborates with Student Affairs and Student Success Program staff to strengthen academic experiences and student belonging.
  • Works with faculty to develop and propose new academic programs and facilitate approval processes.
  • Ensures integration of curriculum changes into the University Catalog with Division Chairs and the Registrar's Office.
  • Provides oversight and coordination of course schedules.
  • Advocates for academic technology to enhance curriculum integrity.
  • Reviews and assesses student learning outcomes and program reviews, submitting evaluative summaries.
  • Serves on faculty search committees and processes employment agreements for adjunct faculty.
  • Supports Division Chairs in coordinating resources for new faculty.
  • Attends Deans Council meetings and leads Division Chair/Faculty meetings, ensuring timely communication.
  • Serves on University committees and taskforces as needed.
  • Attends and supports programmatic Advisory Board meetings, assessing initiatives for strategic alignment.
  • Mentors full-time tenure-track faculty for promotion and tenure, focusing on teaching excellence, service, scholarship, and professional development.
  • Evaluates promotion and tenure portfolios for Division Chairs and writes letters of recommendation.
  • Provides general support and mentoring for all department members, including non-tenure track and adjunct faculty.
  • Conducts classroom evaluations for new faculty and reviews all scheduled evaluations.
  • Conducts yearly evaluations of Division Chairs.
  • Supervises and evaluates Administrative Assistants and staff.
  • Facilitates the resolution of disagreements and conflicts in accordance with University policies.
  • Supervises the Director of Scholarships and Study Abroad and oversees study abroad programs.
  • Co-leads Academic Standing Review, ensuring consistent communication of student academic status.
  • Reviews academic dismissal appeals and reinstatement decisions.
  • Plans and leads the University's annual Scholars' Day and Awards and Honors Society Inductions Ceremony.
  • Facilitates training and professional development for faculty on academic advising, vocational discernment, and teaching pedagogy.
  • Attends and participates in School events to support student and faculty accomplishments.
  • Performs other duties, responsibilities, or special projects as assigned.
