The Database Engineer provides technical expertise for database design, development, implementation, information storage and retrieval, data flow, and analysis. The role develops relational and/or object-oriented databases, database parser software, and database loading software, and structures databases to fit the overall system architecture while balancing data volumes, users, distribution, response times, retention rules, security, and domain controls. The position works primarily in the front end of the lifecycle, from requirements through system acceptance testing and Initial Operational Capability (IOC). It develops requirements for a business and IT subject matter area from project inception through completion, assists with recommendations and evaluations of system improvements and maintenance efforts, and translates requirements and data into usable documents. Work may include creating or recreating ad hoc queries, scripts, and macros; updating and creating queries to manipulate data into a master file; and building systems using queries, tables, Open Database Connectivity, and cloud-based database storage and retrieval methodologies.
