About The Position

The Database Architect designs, implements, and optimizes database architecture for Intelerad’s medical imaging solutions. This strategic technical leader creates scalable, secure, high-performance database systems for PACS, RIS, and enterprise imaging platforms serving healthcare providers and imaging centers globally. The role requires deep expertise in database design, data modeling, and performance optimization in large-scale, mission-critical environments, while balancing technical excellence with business needs. The architect collaborates across engineering, infrastructure, and product teams to ensure data architecture supports current operations and future growth in healthcare IT. The position includes designing enterprise-wide architectures across on-premises, cloud, and hybrid environments; developing data models and documentation aligned with healthcare interoperability standards; establishing database development, security, and compliance practices; optimizing performance and capacity; and providing technical leadership for database technology decisions, integrations, migrations, upgrades, and modernization. The role supports systems where reliability and rapid access to imaging data are important to clinical workflows and patient care. The base pay range is $116,250–$155,000 USD per year in any US geographic market. Pay may vary based on job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. Bonus and other compensation may be included, in addition to medical, financial, retirement, PTO, and/or other benefits.

Requirements

  • Hands-on expertise with relational databases such as Oracle, PostgreSQL, and SQL Server, and NoSQL databases such as MongoDB and Cassandra, including large-scale, high-availability environments.
  • Expertise in data modeling, database design patterns, normalization, and logical and physical data models for complex requirements and high-volume transactional systems.
  • Strong database performance optimization skills, including query tuning, execution plan analysis, indexing strategies, and capacity planning for systems processing millions of transactions and managing petabyte-scale storage.
  • Extensive experience with cloud database platforms and services on AWS, Azure, or GCP, including database migration strategies, hybrid architectures, and cloud-native database solutions.
  • Deep understanding of database security, encryption, access control, regulatory compliance, healthcare data protection, and HIPAA compliance.
  • Ability to lead technical initiatives, mentor development teams, and communicate complex technical concepts to technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or Software Engineering.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with medical imaging systems architecture, including PACS, RIS, VNA, or enterprise imaging platforms, and healthcare data standards such as DICOM, HL7, and FHIR.
  • Hands-on experience with distributed database systems, data replication, sharding, and multi-region architectures.
  • Proficiency with ETL processes and data integration tools, and experience designing pipelines for business intelligence, analytics, and reporting.
  • Experience with Infrastructure as Code tools such as Terraform or CloudFormation for database provisioning and management.
  • Knowledge of DevOps practices and CI/CD for database deployments, including automated database testing, schema version control, and migration automation.
  • Professional certification such as AWS Certified Database Specialty, Microsoft Certified: Azure Database Administrator Associate, Oracle Certified Professional, or TOGAF certification.
  • Experience in Agile development environments and cross-functional collaboration in a remote-first organizational structure.

Responsibilities

  • Design and implement enterprise-wide database architectures for medical imaging platforms, supporting scalability, performance, reliability, and on-premises, cloud, and hybrid deployments.
  • Develop and maintain data models, schemas, and database documentation aligned with DICOM, HL7, and FHIR standards, while optimizing storage and retrieval of large-scale medical imaging data.
  • Establish and enforce database development standards, security protocols, and compliance frameworks, including HIPAA-related protections for data integrity, confidentiality, and availability.
  • Implement backup, disaster recovery, and business continuity strategies for database systems.
  • Lead database performance optimization through query tuning, indexing strategies, capacity planning, proactive system-health monitoring, and solutions to maintain sub-second response times.
  • Collaborate with software engineering, DevOps, and infrastructure teams to integrate databases with application architecture and evaluate and recommend database technologies and platforms.
