About The Position

FM is a leading mutual insurance company dedicated to property risk management and the resilience of its policyholder-owners. The Data Visualization & Reporting Summer Intern will join FM’s analytics team in Johnston, Rhode Island, and gain hands-on experience using data to address business challenges. The intern will build technical skills, explore modern analytics tools and emerging technologies, and learn how data visualization supports business decisions.

The role focuses on transforming complex data into clear, actionable insights and visual stories. The intern will collaborate with team members and business partners to understand business questions, develop data-driven solutions, and improve reporting experiences. The work model requires a minimum of two days per week in the Johnston or Norwood office.

Requirements

• Currently enrolled full-time and pursuing a bachelor’s or master’s degree as a rising junior, rising senior, or graduate student.
• Pursuing a degree in Data Analytics, Business Analytics, Data Science, Information Systems, Computer Science, or a related field.
• Foundational knowledge of data analytics, databases, and data visualization through coursework, academic projects, internships, or other hands-on experience.
• Experience writing SQL queries and familiarity with relational database concepts.
• Experience creating reports, dashboards, or data visualizations using tools such as Power BI, Tableau, or Excel.
• Ability to analyze data and translate findings into clear insights and visual stories for different audiences.
• Strong communication and collaboration skills.
• Ability to ask thoughtful questions, share ideas, and work effectively with others.
• Strong analytical thinking and problem-solving skills.
• Curiosity, attention to detail, and an eagerness to learn and explore new technologies.

Nice To Haves

• Familiarity with Visual Studio Code (VS Code).
• Experience with AI-assisted coding tools.
• Exposure to Figma or an interest in user-centered dashboard and reporting design.
• Familiarity with DAX, Power Query, or advanced Excel.

Responsibilities

• Write SQL queries to extract, organize, transform, and analyze data.
• Build and enhance reports, dashboards, and data visualizations using tools such as Power BI and Excel.
• Translate data into clear, meaningful insights and visual stories that support business decisions.
• Use Visual Studio Code (VS Code) and other development tools to support analytics and reporting solutions.
• Collaborate with team members and business partners to understand business questions and develop data-driven solutions.
• Identify opportunities to improve existing dashboards, reports, and analytics.
• Use Figma and visualization best practices to help create intuitive, user-friendly reporting experiences.
• Support data validation and testing to help ensure reporting is accurate and reliable.
• Gain exposure to emerging technologies, including AI-assisted coding tools.
