Data Scientist: Product

Thatch•Austin, TX

About The Position

Thatch is hiring a Data Scientist to support its Product and Operations teams in understanding how people use its healthcare benefits platform and identifying opportunities to improve it. The role owns product data models and metrics across plan shopping, enrollment, reimbursements, and everyday benefit usage. It involves analyzing user behavior, identifying friction, and designing experiments to guide product decisions. This is a hands-on position responsible for building the analytics foundation used by teams, translating complex data into clear recommendations, and helping shape product strategy. The Data Scientist will partner across functions and work independently in an ambiguous, fast-moving environment. The role uses Snowflake, SQL, dbt, Omni, Hex, Python, GitHub, CI/CD, and AI tools such as Claude, ChatGPT, and Copilot. Direct application-layer development is not part of the day-to-day work, though familiarity with source data and event instrumentation from systems such as Ruby on Rails is helpful.

Requirements

  • Experience using analytics, data science, and experimentation to influence product decisions.
  • Strong SQL skills and experience with dbt or similar data transformation tools.
  • Experience building analytical data models and dashboards using BI or visualization tools.
  • Proficiency in Python for analysis, experimentation, or statistical modeling.
  • Strong product judgment and ability to turn complex findings into clear, actionable recommendations.
  • Ability to work independently, navigate ambiguity, and partner across teams.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience influencing product roadmaps and prioritization through data.
  • Experience building experimentation practices, including guardrail metrics, sample-size guidance, or analysis frameworks.
  • Experience analyzing funnels, retention, cohorts, or engagement across complex user journeys.
  • Experience building statistical or machine-learning models for segmentation, forecasting, propensity, or recommendations.
  • Experience in healthcare, fintech, or other regulated industries.
  • Familiarity with source data and event instrumentation from systems such as Ruby on Rails.

Responsibilities

  • Partner with Product and Operations to answer important questions and inform product priorities.
  • Define and own product metrics, from company-wide success measures to feature-level performance.
  • Analyze user journeys, engagement, and operational data to uncover friction and opportunities.
  • Design and evaluate experiments to measure the impact of product changes.
  • Build and maintain dbt models, metrics, dashboards, and analytical tools used by teams.
  • Improve data quality, instrumentation, and self-serve analytics so teams can make confident decisions.
