Data Scientist, Cloud Distribution & Growth

OpenAI•San Francisco, CA
•$347,000 - $445,000

About The Position

The Data Scientist on OpenAI’s Cloud Distribution & Growth team works with Go-to-Market (GTM), Product, Engineering, and Finance to understand customer reach and growth through cloud service providers. The role investigates what drives usage and revenue across providers, identifies opportunities to increase customer adoption, and helps the business decide where to invest. The position combines customer and account-team insights with analysis of provider usage reports, billing records, and API logs. The Data Scientist will distinguish new usage from activity shifted from OpenAI’s direct API, identify customer readiness to scale, and evaluate how factors such as request failures, latency, model availability, workload expansion, pricing, and model mix affect growth. They will shape provider growth plans with GTM and Finance, recommend investments to Product and Engineering, and own and improve the consumption forecast by comparing predictions with actual usage.

Requirements

  • Experience independently leading data science work on a product, growth, or commercial question that changed a business decision.
  • Strong SQL and Python skills.
  • Ability to join incomplete datasets, choose an appropriate unit of analysis, and validate aggregate results against individual customers or workloads.
  • Experience using cohorts, experiments, or observational comparisons to assess what drove a change.
  • Ability to explain how customer selection affects conclusions and evaluate a forecast against a simple baseline.
  • Comfort making recommendations while some questions remain open and explaining what evidence could change a recommendation.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with API platforms, cloud marketplaces, enterprise GTM, or a usage-based business.
  • Experience connecting service reliability or capacity to customer adoption, or using demand forecasts to guide a commercial or infrastructure investment.

Responsibilities

  • Build a reliable view of the business using provider usage reports, billing records, and API logs, and explain how new workloads, expansion, price changes, and shifts in model mix contribute to growth.
  • Estimate how much demand cloud distribution adds to OpenAI by tracing customer activity across channels and distinguishing new use cases from traffic shifted from the direct API.
  • Identify customers ready to scale by combining account-team feedback with evidence about request failures, latency, and model availability.
  • Work with Product and Engineering on changes intended to support customer usage, then measure the effects on usage.
  • Shape growth plans with GTM and Finance by estimating contributions from existing workloads and upcoming launches, testing key assumptions, and recommending where to focus with each provider.
  • Own the consumption forecast, compare forecasts with actual usage over the same period, explain significant misses, and improve subsequent forecasts.
  • Recommend customer-segment or workload investments and define how to determine whether they brought new usage to OpenAI.
