About The Position

As a Staff Data Scientist, you will help build and evolve Walmart’s core AI conversational platform and agentic shopping experiences across voice, text, rich UI, and multimodal interactions. You will design, evaluate, and productionize advanced language, generative, and agentic AI solutions, while driving projects from problem definition through launch. You will collaborate closely with product, engineering, and UX teams to build scalable, reliable AI systems and enable high-impact customer experiences across Walmart platforms and external super-agent ecosystems. Immigration Sponsorship support will NOT be available for this position. You will contribute to Walmart’s core AI Shopping team, enhancing customer experiences through natural voice, text, and multi-modal interactions. The team develops advanced Natural Language Understanding services that integrate seamlessly across various channels, including voice assistants, customer care, and mobile applications. Collaborating with external platforms like Open AI ChatGPT and Google Gemini, the team focuses on optimizing shopping experiences using predictive analytics, machine learning, and deep learning techniques. This group drives innovation in conversational AI, delivering scalable, data-driven solutions that support Walmart’s commitment to accessible and efficient customer engagement.

Requirements

  • Strong expertise in NLP, large language models, generative and multimodal AI, including prompt optimization, fine-tuning, efficient deployment, and agentic system design and evaluation.
  • Solid Python and largescale data experience.
  • Ability to independently drive complex AI initiatives from requirements through production.
  • Strong technical depth with continuous experimentation and optimization.
  • Effective cross functional collaboration.
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Bachelors degree in Statistics, Economics, Analytics, Mathematics, Computer Science, Information Technology or related field and 4 years' experience in an analytics related field.
  • OR Masters degree in Statistics, Economics, Analytics, Mathematics, Computer Science, Information Technology or related field and 2 years' experience in an analytics related field.
  • OR 6 years' experience in an analytics or related field.

Nice To Haves

  • A strong research background in deep learning or AI, including publications and academic contributions.
  • Data science, machine learning, optimization models.
  • PhD in Machine Learning, Computer Science, Information Technology, Operations Research, Statistics, Applied Mathematics, Econometrics.
  • Successful completion of one or more assessments in Python, Spark, Scala, or R.
  • Using open source frameworks (for example, scikit learn, tensorflow, torch).
  • Background in creating inclusive digital experiences, demonstrating knowledge in implementing Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.2 AA standards, assistive technologies, and integrating digital accessibility seamlessly.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and customize state-of-the-art deep learning based generative models and multimodal models to support conversational customer shopping experience
  • Utilize cutting-edge machine learning/statistical/optimization techniques to deliver solutions for projects in the domain of conversational AI
  • Build, validate, test and deploy language models combined with different machine learning techniques to explain or predict behavior and solve business and engineering problems
  • Standardize and build scalable and highly available systems that follow operational best practices
  • Develop visuals and reports to efficiently communicating model results and insights to business
  • Maintain world-class academic credentials through patent applications, publications, conference presentations, and external collaboration and service to the research community.
