•$110,000 - $220,000

About The Position

Walmart’s Finance Technology team develops intelligent solutions for Accounts Payable (AP), Post Payment Audit (PPA), and Cerebro. The team combines data science, data engineering, software engineering, and business expertise to identify financial anomalies, determine root causes, improve audit effectiveness, and automate financial decision-making. Its goal is to turn large-scale financial and operational data into actionable intelligence and measurable business outcomes. The Staff Data Scientist will design and deliver scalable machine learning and agentic AI solutions across Accounts Payable, Post Payment Audit, and financial analytics. This hands-on role combines applied supervised and unsupervised machine learning with reliable LLM applications and agentic workflows. The successful candidate will take complex business problems from data exploration and experimentation through production deployment and measurable business impact.

Requirements

  • Strong hands-on experience in data science, machine learning, statistical modeling, and applied AI.
  • Experience building and deploying supervised and unsupervised ML solutions, including anomaly detection, classification, clustering, feature engineering, experimentation, model evaluation, and explainability.
  • Experience developing production ML solutions, including data preparation, feature engineering, training, batch scoring or serving, monitoring, and feedback loops.
  • Experience with LLMs, RAG, semantic retrieval, vector databases, hybrid keyword and semantic search, reranking, structured outputs, tool integration, and agentic workflows.
  • Experience with agent orchestration frameworks such as LangGraph, Google ADK, or equivalent, including tool integration, workflow state, and evaluation.
  • Experience connecting AI applications to enterprise tools, data, and services through MCP or comparable tool-integration patterns.
  • Experience evaluating AI systems for quality, groundedness, reliability, and safe behavior.
  • Advanced Python and SQL skills, with experience using modern ML frameworks and large-scale transactional, financial, or operational datasets.
  • Familiarity with MLOps practices, cloud-based ML and AI platforms, and production deployment patterns.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to translate complex business problems into scalable analytical solutions.
  • One of the following minimum qualification paths: a bachelor’s degree in Statistics, Economics, Analytics, Mathematics, Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field and 4 years’ experience in an analytics-related field; a master’s degree in one of those fields and 2 years’ experience in an analytics-related field; or 6 years’ experience in an analytics or related field.

Nice To Haves

  • Data science, machine learning, or optimization models experience.
  • PhD in Machine Learning, Computer Science, Information Technology, Operations Research, Statistics, Applied Mathematics, or Econometrics.
  • Successful completion of one or more assessments in Python, Spark, Scala, or R.
  • Experience using open-source frameworks such as scikit-learn, TensorFlow, or Torch.
  • Knowledge of creating inclusive digital experiences and implementing WCAG 2.2 AA standards, assistive technologies, and digital accessibility best practices.

Responsibilities

  • Design, build, and deploy production-scale ML and AI solutions for Finance problems involving invoices, claims, payments, and audit data.
  • Develop and evaluate supervised and unsupervised models, including anomaly detection, classification, clustering, ranking, prediction, and statistical methods.
  • Build root-cause analysis, signal-correlation, and explainability techniques for financial anomalies, exceptions, and audit findings.
  • Build LLM applications, RAG experiences, tool-calling workflows, and reliable agentic systems, including single-agent and multi-agent workflows where appropriate, using approved knowledge, data, and analytical capabilities safely.
  • Develop evaluation approaches for ML and agentic AI systems, including model performance, task completion, groundedness, tool-use accuracy, safety, and failure behavior.
  • Partner with Data Engineering and Software Engineering to productionize, monitor, explain, retrain, and maintain ML and AI solutions.
  • Contribute to technical design, reusable implementation patterns, and documentation for ML and AI solutions.
  • Communicate analytical findings, model behavior, and business impact clearly to technical and business stakeholders.
