Data Scientist - Product & Visualization

Kepler Labs•San Francisco, CA
•Onsite

About The Position

Kepler is hiring a data scientist to own the final step of turning its asset-level intelligence and Earnings-at-Risk analysis into useful product interfaces and published material for financial-market users. The role combines data analysis with hands-on product and visualization development, working with the same data and analytical standards as the wider data science team. The audience includes portfolio managers, quants, risk teams, and investors. The position will shape how asset-level Earnings-at-Risk is aggregated and presented at company, sector, and portfolio levels, including the design of watchlists, screeners, and sector and hazard drill-downs. It will also own interactive elements and chart libraries for monthly research pages and white papers, and produce customer-facing case studies, demo notebooks, trial-data analysis companions, and reusable figures. The role will improve the experience of consumers using Kepler’s Snowflake data share by creating example queries, notebooks, and a data dictionary, and by analyzing usage to inform the product roadmap. The exact scope and outputs are still being developed, and the hire will help define them in collaboration with the CTO and founders.

Requirements

  • 3–6 years of experience in data science or analytics with real product or visualization work, or in data journalism, graphics, or quant-desk visualization with real analytical depth.
  • Strong Python and SQL skills and statistical ability, including formulating hypotheses, applying controls, and assessing whether results are credible.
  • Experience conducting analysis where the result mattered to a stakeholder.
  • Ability to build interfaces directly using React/TypeScript and tools such as d3, Observable Plot, Mapbox, or deck.gl.
  • Experience shipping interactive data views that people used, rather than only producing notebooks.
  • Strong visual judgment, including choosing appropriate charts and working within a design system.
  • Ability to write for finance readers, prioritizing the headline, then the number, then the caveat.
  • Curiosity about how portfolio managers, quants, and risk teams work.

Nice To Haves

  • Published data stories or interactive graphics, such as work for a newsroom, research house, or Observable.
  • Geospatial experience, including maps, rasters, or vector tiles.
  • Exposure to financial markets or physical-risk data.
  • Product management or design experience and comfort using Figma.
  • Full-stack experience with tools such as Postgres, Snowflake, or Vercel.

Responsibilities

  • Analyze how asset-level Earnings-at-Risk rolls up to companies, sectors, and portfolios, and determine what product views should present.
  • Build product features such as watchlists, screeners, and sector and hazard drill-downs in collaboration with the CTO, using real usage data and onboarding feedback.
  • Produce monthly research pages and white papers, including rerunning analyses when forecasts change and updating exposure maps, charts, and “what to watch” lists.
  • Own interactive research components and the chart library used in published materials.
  • Prepare customer-facing case studies, demo notebooks, and analysis companions for trial data packs, generally turning them around in days.
  • Build a reusable figure library for customer and research materials.
  • Create example queries, notebooks, and a data dictionary to help customers use Kepler’s Snowflake data share.
  • Analyze data-share usage and provide insights to inform the product roadmap.
  • Help define the evolving scope and outputs of the role.

Benefits

  • $150,000–$180,000 salary and 0.3–0.6% equity.
  • Health-insurance reimbursement through QSEHRA.
  • Commitment to grow benefits at every raise and milestone.
  • Office space in San Francisco.
  • Ownership of the product side of Kepler’s data, including what major institutions see from the first screen through the published page.
