About The Position

As a Senior Data Scientist – Retail Intelligence (RI), you will help drive the next generation of data science and AI-driven solutions that power Walmart’s retail operations. This role sits at the intersection of data science, strategy, product, and engineering, supporting the development of advanced analytics, machine learning, and generative AI prototypes that translate complex business challenges into scalable technical solutions. You will contribute to the development of AI capabilities, rapid prototypes, and intelligent agents that accelerate innovation across store operations, supply chain, and workforce domains. This role requires strong technical understanding of data science and AI systems, combined with product thinking and cross-functional collaboration skills to help shape strategy, influence stakeholders, and enable adoption. As a technical leader, you will also support teams across Retail Intelligence in modern AI development practices, LLM prototyping, and solution architecture to drive scalable innovation across the organization. About the team: Retail Intelligence (RI) is a multidisciplinary innovation team within Walmart focused on rapidly prototyping and deploying simulation, machine learning, and AI solutions that improve retail decision-making at scale. The team partners closely with business stakeholders, product teams, and engineering organizations to translate complex operational challenges into data-driven solutions that deliver measurable impact. RI combines science management, product thinking, and technical expertise to accelerate innovation cycles—from ideation and experimentation to production-ready capabilities. The team develops solutions spanning digital twins, workforce optimization, supply chain intelligence, store operations, and emerging AI applications such as generative AI agents. Through strong cross-functional collaboration and a culture of experimentation, RI enables Walmart to test and scale innovative solutions faster than traditional development models while ensuring alignment with long-term platform strategy. What you'll do: Support development of machine learning, advanced analytics, and generative AI prototypes addressing retail business challenges. Contribute to scalable AI solutions and support development of LLM-based agents, decision intelligence systems, and reusable AI capabilities. Translate business problems into structured product opportunities, technical requirements, and experimentation plans. Partner cross-functionally across business, product, engineering, and data science teams to support solution delivery and execution. Help establish best practices for rapid prototyping, AI experimentation, and productionization workflows. Collaborate with teams across Retail Intelligence on AI development practices, LLM prototyping, and applied data science initiatives. Support product and science teams in experimentation design, analytics methodologies, and technical problem solving. Identify opportunities to apply emerging technologies including generative AI, optimization, and simulation to retail use cases. Contribute to reusable frameworks and scalable AI capabilities that can support multiple business domains. Communicate technical concepts and trade-offs clearly to cross-functional stakeholders.

Requirements

  • Strong technical foundation in data science, machine learning, optimization, analytics, or applied AI.
  • Hands-on experience building prototypes, analytics workflows, dashboards, or AI-enabled solutions.
  • Ability to bridge business problems with technical solution development and product thinking.
  • Experience working cross-functionally with data science, engineering, product, and business teams.
  • Strong analytical and systems-thinking mindset with an interest in scalable AI platforms and architectures.
  • Familiarity with experimentation methodologies, analytics frameworks, and data-driven decision making.
  • Experience or interest in generative AI, LLM applications, agent frameworks, or AI automation workflows.
  • Strong communication and stakeholder collaboration skills.
  • Passion for innovation, rapid learning, and applying AI to solve complex operational problems.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Statistics, Economics, Analytics, Mathematics, Computer Science, Information Technology, or related field and 3 years' experience in an analytics related field.
  • Master’s degree in Statistics, Economics, Analytics, Mathematics, Computer Science, Information Technology, or related field and 1 years' experience in an analytics related field.
  • 5 years' experience in an analytics or related field.
