About The Position

BWXT Advanced Technologies is seeking a Computer Vision / Machine Learning R&D Engineer to apply computer vision to complex manufacturing processes. The role supports research and development of nuclear products for space applications, clean power, and propulsion. The position is based on-site at the Advanced Technologies Office in Lynchburg, Virginia, and requires 30–40% domestic and international travel.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, physics, computer science, data science, or a related field.
• Exposure to computer vision and machine learning, and understanding of deep generative models such as GANs, VAEs, and diffusion models.
• Knowledge of signal processing, with demonstrated knowledge and application of signal-processing techniques.
• Ability to work as a self-starter and support multiple teams, systems, and product development.
• Ability to travel 30–40% domestically and internationally.
• Must be a U.S. citizen.
• Must be able to obtain and maintain a U.S. Department of Energy or Department of Defense security clearance, as required.

Responsibilities

• Develop physics-informed and constrained machine learning models integrated with machine vision classifiers to identify and classify manufacturing defects and process variation.
• Work on image classifiers, object detectors, video-understanding models, and multimodal classifiers.
• Develop and improve sensor systems and hardware based on model performance.
• Work with engineering teams to implement model pipelines and deploy services at scale.
• Collaborate with data analysts to understand and identify data patterns.
