Summer 2027 Data Science Intern

The Nuclear CompanyWashington, DC
Onsite

About The Position

The Nuclear Company is a rapidly growing AI tech startup focused on the nuclear and energy sectors, aiming to revolutionize the next generation of nuclear reactors with a fleet-scale approach. Their 'design-once, build-many' model accelerates the deployment of safe, reliable, and affordable nuclear energy. The company emphasizes an AI-first culture, expecting all employees to utilize AI, technology, and the Nuclear Operating System (NOS) to enhance their work's quality, speed, and impact. They seek individuals driven by purpose, comfortable with ambiguity, and excited by innovation. The team values intellectual curiosity, high agency, candid feedback, continuous learning, and exceptional standards, guided by core values of Trust, Responsibility, Unity, Scrappiness, and Tenacity. Trust is paramount for their safety culture, promoting honesty, accountability, and open communication. The company challenges its members to act with urgency, humility, resilience, and a strong commitment to their mission. This role is crucial for developing the software that powers the resurgence of nuclear power in the United States. NOS manages the regulatory, supply chain, cost, schedule, and field operations for real reactor construction, contributing to national security, energy independence, and climate goals. The intern will transform data into actionable decisions for megaproject advancement, engaging in the full applied data science lifecycle: problem framing, data wrangling, model building and validation, and presenting findings to stakeholders. Specific tasks include forecasting and decision analysis for megaproject costs and schedules, enhancing the NOS ontology and data model, and creating analyses and dashboards for leadership. The intern will collaborate closely with full-time data scientists and contribute to production-level work. This is a 12-week paid internship from May to August 2027, based on-site in Washington DC, with full housing and relocation assistance provided for those outside the DC metro area.

  • Expected graduation between December 2027 and June 2028, and returning to school after the internship.
  • Strong Python and the data stack (pandas, NumPy, scikit-learn), with working knowledge of SQL.
  • Foundation in statistics and probability, and a track record of completed data analysis (course, personal, research, or prior internships).
  • This position requires access to information and technology subject to U.S. export controls (including DOE 10 CFR Part 810 and NRC requirements).
  • U.S. Person status (U.S. citizen or lawful permanent resident) is required, and TNC does not provide visa sponsorship for these roles.
