About The Position

The Data Platform Engineer will join the Digital Intelligence & Automation team and own databases, pipelines, and integrations for the District’s Microsoft and Azure data platform. The role serves as the data lead for migrations as the District replaces its customer information system (CIS), finance system, and other core platforms. The engineer will build reliable, supportable data pipelines and integrations that enable water and wastewater services, accurate billing, and analytics. The position designs, builds, and maintains ETL/ELT pipelines using SQL Server, SSIS, and Azure Data Factory; develops database objects and incremental extraction patterns; monitors jobs and addresses failures; and implements alerting, data-quality checks, and documentation. It also engineers interfaces among the CIS, vendors, Cityworks, Esri ArcGIS, operational historian data, and financial systems, while evaluating integration approaches and limiting exposure of customer data. For system replacements, the engineer profiles source data, defines mappings, builds and runs conversion pipelines, reconciles outcomes, prepares staging environments and validation reporting, supports cutover, and updates downstream pipelines. The role automates data tasks using Python, PowerShell, and Power Automate, manages pipeline code and database objects in GitLab, administers Azure data services, and delivers curated, documented datasets to the analytics team. The role can be entirely remote, with occasional attendance at Eagle County, Colorado office locations for team events, training and development, and meetings.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Information Systems, Computer Science, or a related technical field, or two additional years of relevant professional experience.
  • At least five years of experience building and operating production data pipelines, or seven years without a degree.
  • Experience with T-SQL, SQL Server database design and performance tuning, SSIS and/or Azure Data Factory, Python (pandas or similar), and Azure data services.
  • Hands-on system-to-system integration experience, such as file exchange, APIs, or database-to-database integrations.
  • Experience with at least one major system replacement or data migration, including profiling, mapping, conversion, and reconciliation.
  • Git-based version control experience.
  • Ability to document and clearly explain technical trade-offs.

Nice To Haves

  • Utility, municipal, or public-sector experience, especially with a customer information or billing system, Cityworks, or Esri ArcGIS.
  • Experience with SCADA historian data, such as iHistorian or similar, or AMI meter data.
  • PowerShell scripting experience.
  • Power BI experience and understanding of how semantic models consume data.
  • SSAS Tabular, data lake, or other Microsoft data platform experience beyond SQL Server and Data Factory.
  • CI/CD experience for data pipelines or database projects.

Responsibilities

  • Design, build, and maintain ETL/ELT pipelines using SQL Server, SSIS, and Azure Data Factory.
  • Build schemas, views, stored procedures, and incremental extract patterns to keep large datasets current without full reloads.
  • Monitor load jobs, troubleshoot failures to root cause, and establish alerting, data-quality checks, and documentation.
  • Engineer and maintain CIS interfaces with vendors, including payment processing, meter data management, and bank file exchange.
  • Build and support data connections among the CIS, Cityworks, Esri ArcGIS, operational historian data, and financial systems.
  • Evaluate API, file, and database integration options with vendors and recommend durable approaches that limit exposure of customer data.
  • Lead data work for system replacements, including source-data profiling, mapping, conversion pipelines, and reconciliation.
  • Build staging environments and validation reporting, support go-live cutover, and rebuild downstream pipelines as source systems change.
  • Automate data tasks using Python, PowerShell, and Power Automate.
  • Manage pipeline code and database objects in GitLab according to team change practices.
  • Administer the Azure data services used by the platform.
  • Deliver curated, well-documented datasets to the analytics team.
