Data Engineer

VoltaGrid•Houston, TX

About The Position

The Data Engineer designs, develops, and maintains data pipelines, models, and governance controls for VoltaGrid’s cloud data platform. The role ensures that data—including high-frequency telemetry from the power generation fleet—is reliable, accessible, secure, and cost-efficient. The Data Engineer collaborates with Operations, Finance, Data Science, and Software Engineering to support analytics, business reporting, customer-facing data products, and AI initiatives. The position supports production data systems, establishes data quality standards, and improves platform performance and scalability. Snowflake experience is highly preferred.

Requirements

  • Minimum of four years of experience in data engineering or a closely related role.
  • Strong SQL and Python skills.
  • Experience designing, deploying, and operating production data pipelines at scale.
  • Experience working with large datasets.
  • Experience with pipeline orchestration and scheduling tools.
  • Experience with Git and CI/CD practices for data or software deployments.
  • Strong understanding of data modeling, data warehousing, and ETL and ELT design patterns.
  • Strong understanding of data quality, observability, and monitoring practices.
  • Understanding of data security and access control fundamentals.
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to work effectively with technical and non-technical stakeholders.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with time-series, IoT, or sensor data.
  • Hands-on experience operating Snowflake in production environments, including Dynamic Tables, Tasks, Streams, and Snowpipe or Snowpipe Streaming.
  • Experience with Snowflake warehouse sizing, clustering, query tuning, and cost controls.
  • Experience with Snowflake data metric functions, tagging, masking policies, row access policies, and Secure Data Sharing.
  • Experience with zero-copy cloning, Time Travel, and schema migration or infrastructure-as-code tools.
  • Experience with Snowpark or Snowflake Cortex and related AI capabilities.
  • Experience in energy, power generation, oil and gas, or industrial and operational technology (OT) data environments.
  • Experience with Grafana or business intelligence tools.

Responsibilities

  • Design, build, and maintain batch, streaming, and event-driven data pipelines integrating SaaS applications, APIs, and industrial telemetry sources.
  • Develop and optimize data models and transformations across raw, integration, and presentation layers.
  • Establish and monitor data freshness service-level agreements and implement monitoring and alerting for pipeline health.
  • Implement automated data quality checks and controls to prevent inaccurate or incomplete data from reaching downstream systems, particularly customer-facing and financial applications.
  • Optimize performance and control compute costs for large time-series datasets through warehouse sizing, clustering, query tuning, budgets, and resource monitoring.
  • Develop and maintain CI/CD workflows, including version-controlled schema changes and promotion across development, testing, and production environments.
  • Implement and maintain data governance and security controls, including role-based access, tagging, masking, and row-level security.
  • Develop, secure, and monitor data products shared with customers and business partners.
  • Document data assets, establish ownership, and develop semantic models supporting self-service analytics and AI tools.
  • Identify and retire obsolete or unused data assets and establish consistent naming conventions and design standards.
  • Collaborate with business and engineering stakeholders to define requirements, develop data designs, and deliver new data products.
  • Participate in incident response, root cause analysis, and production support for data systems.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
