About The Position

Pearson Virtual Schools (PVS) is seeking a Power BI Developer for its Enabling Technology team. The role builds and delivers analytics and ETL solutions to support decision-making across PVS, working across data engineering and business intelligence to turn data into clear, useful reporting experiences. The developer partners with data engineers, analysts, and business stakeholders to create semantic models, dashboards, and reports that follow established data products and organizational standards. This is a hands-on individual contributor role with independent ownership of reporting work throughout the delivery lifecycle, from requirements gathering through deployment and support. The role also collaborates with experienced team members on broader analytics and data engineering initiatives. The work supports school operations, student outcomes analysis, enterprise reporting, and PVS’s data product strategy through governed, reusable data foundations and self-service analytics.

Requirements

  • At least 4 years of practical Power BI experience, including report development, visualizations, DAX, Power Query, and semantic modeling.
  • Strong knowledge of data modeling concepts, including star schema and fact/dimension design.
  • Experience with SQL and structured datasets in data warehouses or lakehouses.
  • Familiarity with data pipelines and integration concepts, such as Azure Data Factory and ETL/ELT patterns.
  • Experience independently delivering reporting solutions from requirements through deployment and support.
  • Ability to troubleshoot common data, performance, and visualization issues, with support when needed.
  • Experience improving data quality, reliability, and usability.
  • Strong communication skills and ability to deliver value to internal and external customers.
  • Ability to translate complex technical concepts into clear, actionable insights.
  • Experience working cross-functionally with engineering, analytics, and business teams.
  • Strong documentation and knowledge-sharing practices.
  • 3–5 years of experience in Power BI development, business intelligence, data analysis, or a related area.
  • Experience building or supporting reports and dashboards used for operational or business decision-making.
  • Experience working with data in an environment where tools, architecture, and governance practices continue to evolve.

Nice To Haves

  • Exposure to Tabular Editor 3, DAX Studio, or ALM Toolkit.
  • Experience in education, EdTech, or multi-tenant data environments.
  • Experience with Google BigQuery.
  • Exposure to data governance, lineage, and semantic layer standardization.
  • Experience supporting self-service analytics at scale.

Responsibilities

  • Design and develop Power BI dashboards and reports for school operations, student outcomes analysis, and enterprise reporting.
  • Translate business needs into intuitive, actionable visualizations aligned with PVS reporting standards.
  • Improve report performance, usability, and accessibility for school leaders, analysts, executives, and other end users.
  • Implement and maintain data security policies in reporting tools in accordance with PVS security policies, governance, and best practices.
  • Build and maintain Power BI semantic models (datasets) as governed, reusable data foundations.
  • Apply data modeling practices such as star schema, DAX optimization, and row-level security.
  • Partner with engineering to align data pipelines with the reporting layer.
  • Validate data outputs and ensure consistency between reports and source systems.
  • Troubleshoot data discrepancies, refresh failures, and performance issues.
  • Contribute to monitoring, testing, and documentation of reporting solutions.
  • Implement and validate Row Level Security in a multi-tenant environment.
  • Work with business stakeholders to refine requirements and prioritize features.
  • Participate in design discussions, backlog refinement, and peer reviews.
  • Communicate technical tradeoffs, risks, and timelines to technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Contribute scalable, reusable reporting assets aligned with the PVS data product strategy.
  • Support self-service analytics through well-documented datasets and consistent definitions.
