About The Position

NerdWallet is hiring a Data Engineer II to design, develop, and maintain reliable data systems, pipelines, and models that support analytics, experimentation, product innovation, and strategic decision-making. The role works directly within a product vertical, partnering with Data Org colleagues and cross-functional stakeholders to shape data that informs business decisions and user experiences. The engineer will lead well-scoped data assets, solve moderately complex problems, and build maintainable, scalable, high-quality pipelines in a fast-paced environment with shifting priorities. The position is part of Data Org and reports to a Senior Manager of Data Engineering. It is remote and based in the United States.

Requirements

At least 3 years of experience in data engineering, analytics engineering, software engineering, or a related field.
Hands-on experience with modern data-stack tools such as AWS, Snowflake, dbt, Airflow, Databricks, or similar.
Strong SQL skills.
Working proficiency in Python for pipeline development, transformation, automation, and debugging.
Comfort using AI-assisted tools such as Cursor or GitHub Copilot.
Working knowledge of relational databases, data modeling, and query performance.
Experience building and troubleshooting production pipelines.
Familiarity with data quality, monitoring, logging, testing, and observability.
Logical problem-solving skills, including defining issues, investigating anomalies, and drawing sound conclusions.
Comfort working within established patterns and recognizing opportunities to improve them.
Strong written and verbal communication skills for engineering, analyst, and business audiences.
Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent experience.

Responsibilities

Lead well-scoped data assets that are accurate, reliable, documented, and aligned to stakeholder needs.
Build and improve data pipelines using established patterns, with a focus on maintainability, scalability, and quality.
Solve moderately complex problems independently and escalate when tradeoffs or dependencies require broader input.
Strengthen pipeline reliability and observability by monitoring jobs, investigating failures, improving tests, and preventing recurrence.
Communicate requirements, assumptions, progress, tradeoffs, and shifting scope or timelines with cross-functional partners.
Break down ambiguous work, ask thoughtful questions, and partner with senior engineers on the path forward.
Prioritize work by impact, urgency, and risk; apply sound implementation judgment and seek feedback on design and execution.
Write clean, tested, and documented code, adopting modern practices including AI-enabled tooling.
Develop technical depth by taking on more challenging work and learning from feedback, reviews, and mentorship.
