About The Position

As a Data Engineer I at Travelers, you’ll contribute to how Business Insurance CMP and Specialty pricing decisions are powered by data. Working alongside Actuarial and Data Science partners, you’ll help turn analytical ideas into trusted, production-grade assets that directly influence pricing outcomes across core insurance products. This is not a maintenance role. You’ll join a team that is actively modernizing its data platforms migrating legacy processes to cloud-native architectures using AWS Glue, Step Functions, and PySpark, and embedding MLOps practices into how pricing models are developed and deployed. You’ll build domain expertise CMP and Specialty while contributing to high-visibility initiatives that strengthen data reliability, model readiness, and long-term scalability across pricing platforms. The ideal candidate is eager to grow as a data engineer, curious about the insurance domain, and energized by cross-functional collaboration. You’ll be supported by experienced engineers and leaders who are invested in your development. Your contributions will directly advance Travelers’ pricing strategies in a dynamic and evolving marketplace.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree in STEM related field or equivalent. Six years of related experience.
  • Proficient use of tools, techniques, and manipulation including Cloud platforms, programming languages, and an understanding of software engineering practices.
  • The ability to deliver work at a steady, predictable pace to achieve commitments, decompose work assignments into small batch releases, and contribute to tradeoff and negotiation discussions.
  • Demonstrated track record of domain expertise including the ability to understand technical concepts and possess in-depth knowledge of immediate systems worked on.
  • Proven problem solving skills including debugging skills, allowing you to determine source of issues in unfamiliar code or systems and the ability to recognize and solve repetitive problems.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills with the ability to interact with team members and business partners.
  • Leadership - Intermediate leadership skills with a proven track record of self-motivation in identifying personal growth opportunities.

Nice To Haves

  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science, related STEM field, or its equivalent in education and/or work experience.
  • 2 additional years of software/data engineering experience.

Responsibilities

  • Data Engineering & Pipeline Development Develop and support data pipelines for CMP and Specialty pricing use cases, ensuring reliability and scalability across production environments
  • Execute data preparation activities including exploration, cleansing, and transformation with growing awareness of enterprise architecture, Platforms, and downstream consumption patterns
  • Translate actuarial and data science requirements into scalable, production-ready data solutions with guidance from senior engineers
  • Support data quality controls, profiling, and monitoring across the model development lifecycle
  • Model Implementation Support model implementation for CMP and Specialty pricing models in partnership with Data Science and Actuarial teams
  • Learn and adopt MLOps practices across the model development and implementation lifecycle
  • Domain Expertise & Collaboration Build CMP and Specialty data knowledge over time, growing into a subject matter resource for benchmarks, modernization initiatives, and future enhancements
  • Contribute to project planning and execution across CMP and Specialty data engineering initiatives
  • Present analysis and contribute technical recommendations to support data implementation decisions
  • Growth & Team Contribution Participate in code reviews and design discussions, contributing to team standards and best practices
  • Contribute to platform modernization efforts, helping migrate legacy processes to cloud-native architectures on AWS
  • Apply agile methodologies to plan, prioritize, and deliver work across concurrent initiatives
