About The Position

SpaceX is hiring a systems-focused, automation-driven engineer to support the Starship Launch Pad. The engineer applies electrical and mechanical systems knowledge to the design of launch infrastructure and develops and integrates physical hardware such as wire harnesses, PCBs, custom enclosures, PLCs, data acquisition systems, avionics systems, engine controllers, and sensors. The role supports the transfer of real-time sensor data to pad operators, responsible engineers, and customers; operational support and accurate interpretation of collected data are critical to safe, economical, and reliable access to space. The position is based at Kennedy Space Center in Cape Canaveral, Florida. The engineer designs, builds, maintains, and upgrades control and data acquisition infrastructure for Starship launch and test operations. The role also provides technical support and guidance to technicians and other engineering groups, analyzes system health data, and helps design and assess experiments. The position may involve extended hours and weekends based on site operational needs, physical work in varied weather and industrial conditions, and travel to other facilities up to 25%.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in physics, electrical engineering, or computer engineering.
  • At least 6 months of experience working with data acquisition systems; internship or project experience qualifies.
  • Ability to pass the Air Force background check for Cape Canaveral.
  • Ability to stand, kneel, crouch, twist the upper body, and work in cramped positions and small openings.
  • Ability to regularly climb stairs and/or ladders throughout the day.
  • Ability to lift lightweight supplies or materials up to 25 pounds unassisted.
  • Availability to work extended hours and weekends when needed based on site operational needs; flexibility required.
  • Ability to travel to other SpaceX or third-party facilities up to 25%.
  • Must meet U.S. Government export-control eligibility requirements: be a U.S. citizen or national, lawful permanent resident, refugee, or asylee, or be eligible to obtain required U.S. Department of State authorizations.

Nice To Haves

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Passion for advancing the commercial space industry and human spaceflight.
  • Strong work ethic, positive attitude, and drive to succeed as part of a high-functioning team.
  • Ability to rapidly change roles and responsibilities in a fast-paced, challenging work environment.
  • Ability to thrive amid ambiguity, independently drive project progress, and manage multiple priorities.
  • Knowledge of high-reliability processes and related documentation practices.
  • Demonstrated ability to design, implement, and troubleshoot data acquisition and control hardware.
  • Understanding of engineering principles behind electronic equipment, instrumentation, and commonly used industrial equipment.
  • Experience designing and installing instrumentation and control systems in hazardous areas, including NFPA 70 Section 500 Class I, Division 1 and Division 2 environments or IEC equivalents.
  • Familiarity with mixed-signal electronics, power supply design, analog filtering, testing and troubleshooting techniques, signal integrity, layout, and grounding principles.
  • General schematic capture and PCB design and/or verification and validation experience.
  • Experience with electrical power distribution and working knowledge of NFPA 70 and NFPA 70E.
  • First-hand experience with programming and software development.
  • Experience with industrial bus protocols such as Modbus, Profinet, and EtherNet/IP.
  • Hands-on experience activating, building, and troubleshooting analog and digital electronic systems, including avionics.

Responsibilities

  • Design and build controls infrastructure for ground support equipment used to test and launch the Starship Launch Vehicle.
  • Maintain the operational capability of activated electrical systems at control voltage levels below 60V.
  • Develop and upgrade data acquisition and control systems across launch infrastructure.
  • Create automation systems to meet the evolving needs of launch and test infrastructure.
  • Provide technical support and guidance to controls technicians and other non-controls engineering groups.
  • Develop hardware and processes to improve capabilities and reduce cost and electrical-system setup time.
  • Analyze data to assess the function and health of electrical systems.
  • Assist in designing and analyzing experiments to evaluate test articles.
