About The Position

The Natural History Museums of Los Angeles County (NHMLAC) is seeking a Data Collector, Evaluation for its Education & Programs department. Data Collectors will work alongside the Director, Evaluation & Museum Impact to collect visitor data for evaluations of museum programs, exhibitions, and other projects. This role also involves administering the Museums’ ongoing visitor exit survey. Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree or at least two years of equivalent training or experience.
  • Experience with or coursework related to methods of social science research.
  • One or more years of experience recruiting participants for research studies or similar outreach activities in another setting.
  • Experience administering surveys and/or conducting in-person interviews, in one-on-one or group settings.
  • Excellent listening, observation, and organizational skills, with attention to detail.
  • Ability to work independently and as a member of a team.
  • Ability to quickly troubleshoot and adapt to unexpected circumstances in the course of performing job duties.

  • Graduate-level coursework is desirable.

Responsibilities

  • Recruit Museum visitors to participate in evaluation studies using random sampling or other techniques, offering incentives when appropriate.
  • Interact with Museum visitors to collect data both independently, and as part of a team of Data Collectors.
  • Administer surveys on either tablets or paper, keeping detailed logs of survey activities.
  • Work three- or four-hour shifts administering the Museums’ exit survey at both the Natural History Museum and La Brea Tar Pits, on an ongoing basis.
  • Pilot and give feedback on evaluation instruments, including surveys and interview protocols.
  • Secondary duties may include unobtrusive observations of visitors, in-person interviews, and data entry and analysis tasks, depending on organizational needs.
