About The Position

Johnson Controls is hiring a Data Center Mechanical Service Technician Apprentice to support its HVAC service business in Abilene, Texas. The role provides maintenance, repair, replacement, installation, troubleshooting, and aftermarket services for commercial heating and cooling systems and related mechanical equipment. Work may include commercial HVACR service and work alongside Journeymen on centrifugal, steam turbine, absorption, open-drive screw chiller, and ammonia systems.

The technician serves customers by identifying facility inefficiencies, resolving service issues, recommending solutions, providing quotes, and supporting efficient facility operation. The role includes factory training and certification through the Service Technical Academy, with career development and possible advancement. The position is a bargaining-unit role, and employment is subject to pre-hiring screening. Following successful performance, Johnson Controls may recommend the employee to the local union apprenticeship program; union acceptance must occur within 365 days of employment for continued employment in this position. Union acceptance and continued employment are not guaranteed.

The job is based in Abilene, Texas, and may require 10% to 20% travel to support branch customer activities, troubleshooting, installation, and repair. Pay is $21.60 per hour, determined by the applicable collective bargaining agreement rate sheet. Benefits are provided through a local labor union aligned with a collective bargaining agreement. Johnson Controls provides tools, uniforms, and a company vehicle.

Requirements

• Must be a member of, or willing to join, the United Association of Journeymen and Apprentices of the Plumbing and Pipe Fitting Industry of the United States and Canada, AFL-CIO.
• At least eight years of commercial and/or industrial mechanical troubleshooting experience in HVAC and industrial petrochemical or data center environments.
• Experience with rooftop units, pumps, fans, cooling towers, boilers, chillers, compressors, and plumbing.
• Ability to repair centrifugal compressors, steam turbines, screw chillers, and/or ammonia or hydrocarbon system components.
• Maintain ammonia and hydrocarbon safety training certification.
• Ability to install complete systems, including chillers, rooftop units, plumbing, and supporting mechanical systems.
• Experience with mechanical shaft alignment using dial indicators, lasers, or similar tools for pumps, fans, and compressors.
• Ability to use vibration equipment to troubleshoot drivelines.
• Ability to pass a knowledge examination assessing proficiencies.
• Universal EPA refrigerant license, applicable state or local licensing, and a valid driver's license.
• Attention to detail and interpersonal, digital, and written communication skills.
• Ability to provide customer quotes and participate in the Service Plus Rewards program.
• Self-starter with a desire to learn and apply knowledge on the job.
• Commitment to prioritizing safety.
• Willingness to enroll in HVAC product and sales-quoting training programs.

Responsibilities

• Troubleshoot, repair, and provide aftermarket service for commercial HVAC systems and mechanical equipment.
• Perform maintenance, repair, and replacement services on commercial heating and cooling systems.
• Install complete systems, including chillers, rooftop units, plumbing, and supporting mechanical systems.
• Work on or alongside Journeymen in the repair of centrifugal, steam turbine, absorption, open-drive screw chiller, and ammonia systems.
• Provide customers with solutions to facility inefficiencies and resolve service-related issues.
• Recommend solutions to improve facility efficiency and provide customer quotes.
• Communicate customer problems, causes, and corrective actions through interpersonal, digital, and written communication.
• Work with local market mechanics, servicemen, and apprentices, and provide on-the-job training when necessary.
• Participate in the Service Plus Rewards program.
• Prioritize safety and maintain required ammonia and hydrocarbon safety training certification.
• Travel as needed to support branch customer activities, troubleshooting, installation, and repair.
