About The Position

The Massachusetts Life Sciences Center (MLSC) is an economic development and investment agency focused on fostering the growth of the life sciences in Massachusetts. The MLSC aims to be a central hub for the global life sciences ecosystem, promoting innovation through investments, strengthening the state's leadership position, accelerating the commercialization of treatments, and driving economic and workforce development. Under the direct supervision of the Scientific Innovation and Strategic Investments team, the Intern will support data-related projects and strategies at the MLSC. This includes data generation in collaboration with program teams, data strategy development, project management, cross-team engagement, tracking programmatic performance metrics, and data maintenance/governance.

Requirements

  • Currently pursuing a Bachelor's or Master's degree in Data Analytics, Statistics, Computer Science, Information Systems, Economics, Mathematics, Public Policy, Business Analytics, or a related field.
  • Foundational knowledge of program/investment analytics principles and practices.
  • Experience working with relational databases, data modeling, and data warehousing concepts.
  • Experienced with data visualization tools and techniques.
  • Experience assessing the relevance and limitations of data-based metrics on evaluating progress toward strategic objectives.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with Airtable, NetSuite, Salesforce, SurveyMonkey and SmartSimple is highly desirable.

Responsibilities

  • Collaborates with program teams to gather requirements, identify data sources, and deliver data-driven reports and dashboards for organization-wide and program-specific objectives.
  • Develops data storytelling strategies aligned with the organization’s mission and vision.
  • Develops and implements tools and processes for data collection, ensuring comprehensive datasets and identifying/addressing missing data points for impact measurement.
  • Supports the analysis, cleaning, and validation of data from progress reports to ensure accuracy and enable meaningful program impact assessments.
  • Ensures data accuracy and integrity within data sources, potentially through confirmation from secondary sources.
  • Develops and enhances the data warehouse; oversees back-end transaction/data processing.
  • Identifies, examines, and deciphers trends or patterns, creatively grouping disparate data to tell a story.
  • Presents data findings and impact metrics in clear, engaging visual formats for internal teams and external stakeholders.
  • Participates in special projects, including ad hoc analyses, detailed information requests, and other fiscal projects/tasks related to government agencies and legislative offices.
  • Balances long-term projects with short-term demands under tight deadlines.
