About The Position

The Education and Child Development Department at NORC at the University of Chicago is looking for a Data Analyst I or II to work on education topics including career pathways, post-secondary campus climate research, evaluation studies, statistical methods, data science, and analysis across a broad range of education and social policy issues. The Data Science job family provides analytical expertise for NORC projects and initiatives. Data Analysts import, clean, transform, validate, and model data, and may support data presentation with charts, graphs, and tables. They may also assist in data collection, identify and interpret trends, and maintain databases. Data Analysts are expected to work collaboratively in a team environment. NORC's Education and Child Development department has been committed to high-quality education research and capacity building for over 40 years, focusing on populations from preschoolers to post-graduate doctorate holders.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in social science (psychology, education, public policy, economics, statistics or other related field) with an emphasis on data science or statistics. Degrees in other subjects may be considered, if other relevant skills apply.
  • 0-2 years’ experience in positions of increasing responsibility, preferably working with large data sets, conducting statistical and quantitative analysis and testing, data linkage, and data validation.
  • Strong foundation in areas of statistics and data science.
  • Coding skills in languages such as SAS, R, or Stata are required.
  • Strong skills in problem solving and quantitative analysis are required.
  • Able to organize and prioritize work assignments to meet project needs.
  • Outstanding interpersonal and critical reasoning skills.
  • Proficiency with MS Office software, including Excel.
  • Qualified applicants must be U.S. citizens due to security clearance requirements for projects.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with data privacy and disclosure review a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Gathering and assembling analytic results using a variety of techniques, ranging from simple data aggregation to basic analytical/predictive statistical analysis.
  • Collaborate with project directors and subject matter experts to implement and improve data management and analysis activities.
  • Develop programs and scripts for data cleaning, integration, transformation, and harmonization, as well as data quality checks and validation.
  • Support and enhance applications and databases already built for various research needs and produce data documentation and dictionaries.
  • Create data dashboards and visualizations, including preparing charts, graphs, and tables for reports and presentations.
  • Perform various types of data analysis and modeling, often involving multiple data sets.
  • Contribute to documentation, reports, and presentations through writing sections, creating basic analytic summaries, and developing tables and graphics.
  • Apply AI tools to help improve efficiency.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
