About The Position

The New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene (NYC Health Department), a large public health agency serving 8 million New Yorkers, is undertaking an initiative to prevent, prepare for, and respond to the expanding multistate outbreak of Influenza A/H5N1 and strengthen readiness for any respiratory disease threat. This is a grant-funded position managed by Public Health Solutions, with the selected candidate working under the supervision of the NYC Health Department. The Division of Disease Control, specifically the Bureau of Communicable Diseases and its Disease Investigation Unit, focuses on the surveillance, prevention, and control of infectious diseases. The intern will assist with cleaning, analyzing, and summarizing surveillance data related to Influenza A/H5N1 and other communicable diseases, including tickborne diseases. The role involves case investigation, data collection, patient interviews, data analysis, data management, and fieldwork.

Requirements

  • Currently enrolled in a graduate (MPH, MS or PhD) program in public health or related field
  • Capacity and willingness to learn Maven surveillance database
  • Pro-active and self-motivated individual with the ability to work in teams and in a highly dynamic environment with multiple stakeholders and timelines.

  • Previous work experience, particularly in fields related to public health, medicine, or customer service.

Responsibilities

  • Investigate cases of communicable diseases including H5N1 and tickborne diseases.
  • Collect data from health care providers and medical records.
  • Interview patients about their illness, exposures, and contacts.
  • Perform data analysis.
  • Perform data entry and data management.
  • Assist in tickborne and H5N1 fieldwork activities.
