About The Position

Under limited supervision of the South Carolina Violent Report System (SCVDRS) and Overdoes Data to Action – State Unintentional Drug Overdose Reporting System (SUDORS) Assistant Unit Manager in the Bureau of Chronic Disease and Injury Prevention – Epidemiology, Analytics, & Data Visualization Section, the Program Coordinator I (SCVDRS-SUDORS Abstractor) abstracts violent and drug overdose death data from death records and participates in quality assurance and improvement activities to support the SCVDRS surveillance system. This position works with personally identifiable information. Abstracts and enters de-identified violent and drug overdose death data from death certificates, coroner and law enforcement records, toxicology reports, and supplemental records into the Centers of Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) National Violent Death Reporting System (NVDRS) web-based data system. Assists with record retrieval and data quality activities for assigned DPH counties. Searches county and municipal law enforcement and coroner websites and social media accounts (Facebook, X) for official press releases. Assists with quality assurance and quality improvement activities to include record re-abstraction, data verification, and maintenance. May assist with compilation, publication, and presentation of data for internal and external stakeholders. Maintains up-to-date knowledge of CDC NVDRS and SUDORS by participating in trainings, conference calls, meetings, webinars, and literature reviews. Maintains information in accordance with DPH policy and all other applicable guidelines and laws. Travels in-state to conduct abstraction at data providers offices. As directed, travels in-state or out-of-state for conference participation or training. Performs all other duties as assigned related to the position.

Requirements

  • A high school diploma and relevant program experience.
  • Any equivalent combination of education and/or experience that demonstrates the required knowledge, skills, and abilities may be considered in meeting the minimum qualifications, subject to approval by the DPH Chief Human Resources Officer or their designee.

Nice To Haves

  • A bachelor's degree and one (1) or more years of experience in death investigation, law enforcement, pre-hospitalization care, or healthcare.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, MS Teams, and One Drive applications.
  • Experience working in virtual and hybrid environments with remote partners and teams.
