About The Position

The main purpose of the dance/movement therapist is to provide adjunct therapy, in collaboration with the primary therapist/clinician, to both residential and day treatment students. The dance/movement therapist assesses, schedules and conducts movement therapy for emotionally disturbed clients, working towards the goals indicated in the clients IEP or individual treatment plan. Dance/movement therapy compliments individual therapy when traditional verbal therapy can not be utilized effectively and a nonverbal therapeutic modality is needed to assure that quality mental health treatment is accessible.

Requirements

  • A Bachelor’s degree in dance therapy from an accredited college or university.
  • One year of experience performing dance therapy work in the treatment of mentally ill, aged, physically ill or physically disabled clients or developmentally disabled clients.
  • Possession of a motor vehicle operator’s license valid in the State of Maryland (if assigned duties requiring operation of a motor vehicle).
  • Successful completion of cardiopulmonary resuscitation training and maintain current certification (if required).
  • Obtain Red Cross instruction and certification in Life Saving and Water Safety prior to permanent appointment (if assigned to facilities with a swimming pool).

Nice To Haves

  • Master’s degree in dance therapy.
  • Current registration as a professional Dance Therapist from the American Dance Therapy Association.
  • Four years of experience as a professional dance therapist, under the supervision of a licensed Occupational Therapist, licensed Physical Therapist or certified Activity Therapist, which included the responsibility for clients’ assessments and the planning, implementation and evaluation of clients’ dance therapy treatment in a mental health or developmental disability setting.
  • U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a commissioned officer in Physical Therapy classification or Physical Therapy or Medical Services specialty codes in the dance therapy field of work.

Responsibilities

  • Assess, schedule and conduct movement therapy for emotionally disturbed clients.
  • Work towards the goals indicated in the clients IEP or individual treatment plan.
  • Provide adjunct therapy in collaboration with the primary therapist/clinician.
