About The Position

This position involves the evaluation of specimens obtained by a variety of techniques, including fine needle aspiration of major organ systems and subcutaneous masses. The role requires knowledge of body systems to ensure the correlation and validity of results. The Cytotechnologist will provide technically sound, accurate, and patient-focused testing by prioritizing samples, verifying specimen identification, ensuring sample appropriateness and quality, and performing correct accessioning and testing. The position also involves adherence to policy and procedure manuals, participation in accreditation inspections, support for cytology supervisors, and effective participation in quality improvement activities. The role requires understanding the relationship between clinical data and morphological changes in cytology samples, interpreting disease presentations, and applying this knowledge to achieve an accurate diagnosis. This includes subjective microscopic evaluations based on academic instruction, technical training, experience, and prioritizing guideline sources. The Cytotechnologist will also participate in continuing education programs and proficiency testing.

Requirements

  • A science-based bachelor’s or associate degree.
  • 1 year of specialty training at an accredited school of Cytotechnology, in addition to a bachelor’s degree or associate degree.
  • Graduation from an accredited school of Cytotechnology, with a science-based bachelor’s degree.
  • Graduation from an accredited school of Cytotechnology with a science-based associate's degree and at least 3 years of technical experience.
  • Requires certification, CT (ASCP), or equivalent, and registration with the American Society of Clinical Pathologists (ASCP) Board of Registry within 1 year of employment.
  • Professional knowledge of Cytotechnology principles, concepts and methodology sufficient to perform a broad range of tests, including microscopic analysis of Gyn, Nongyn, and Fine Needle Aspirate cellular specimens.

Responsibilities

  • Prioritizing of “rush” and routine samples
  • Verification of specimen identification
  • Ensuring appropriateness of sample for requested testing
  • Ensuring quality and quantity of sample
  • Ensuring correct and appropriate accessioning, testing or allocating is performed
  • Proper CoPath data entry
  • Understand and adhere to Policy and Procedure Manuals, Standard Operating Manuals and Quality Control Manuals in compliance with all regulatory agencies (CAP & CLIA)
  • Participate in preparation for CAP and JCAHO accreditation inspection
  • Support cytology supervisors as necessary, gather statistics, evaluate laboratory preparedness etc.
  • Participates as an effective member of the department
  • Promotes effective relationships with all hospital personnel
  • Actively and effectively participates in Quality Advancement/Improvement activities according to standard operating procedure
  • Understands the relationship between relevant clinical data and a variety of complex, similar, yet different often-overlapping morphological changes in cytology samples
  • Interprets the various clinical presentations of disease and applies such knowledge in conjunction with the microscopic findings to affect an appropriate and accurate final diagnosis
  • Provides a scope of judgment which includes subjective microscopic evaluations based on combinations of academic instruction, technical training, quality and quantity of experience and combinations of knowledge and skills, as well as prioritizing guideline sources and interpreting applicability in matters of specimen identification, processing, recording and quality control
  • Participate in the CAP interlaboratory continuing education program
  • Participates in and passes Proficiency Testing annually
  • Utilizes hospital's Values as the basis for decision-making and to facilitate the division's hospital mission
  • Follows established hospital infection control and safety procedures
