2027 Internship - Cyber Physical Systems

Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory•Laurel, MD

About The Position

We are seeking a Cyber-Physical Systems Intern to help us deliver and defeat powerful intelligence, surveillance, reconnaissance, and targeting (ISR&T) capabilities. Cyber-Physical Systems (CPS) are "smart systems" featuring networks of devices that can sense, process, and communicate information. Our multi-disciplinary teams build CPS prototypes that use these capabilities to provide exquisite situational awareness to users in the homeland security, military, and intelligence sectors. We employ a wide range of advanced technologies from machine learning to autonomous vehicles to power our solutions. We also help our sponsors understand and counter the threats posed by the rapidly expanding CPS technology being employed by our adversaries.

Requirements

  • Pursuing a Bachelor's, Master's, or PhD in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Robotics, or a closely related field.
  • Minimum 3.0 GPA on a 4.0 scale.
  • Proficient in software development using Python, C, and/or C++.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, and skilled at developing relationships across diverse teams.
  • Able to obtain an Interim Secret level security clearance by your start date and can ultimately obtain a Secret level clearance.
  • U.S. citizenship.

Nice To Haves

  • Knowledge or skills in sensing technology principles and applications (e.g. cameras, PIR sensors, LiDAR, RADAR).
  • Knowledge or skills in general purpose data manipulation and analysis packages such as NumPy, Pandas, OpenCV, etc.
  • Knowledge or skills in machine learning for detection, classification, and identification.
  • Knowledge or skills in large-scale data curation, SQL and NoSQL databases, and graph analysis.
  • Knowledge or skills in edge computing devices, such as Arduino, Raspberry Pi, or NVIDIA Jetson platforms.
  • Knowledge or skills in mobile application development for Android and/or iOS environments.
  • Knowledge or skills in autonomous vehicle guidance and control algorithms and software.
  • Knowledge or skills in software applications employing the Robot Operating System (ROS).
  • Knowledge or skills in wired and wireless networking architectures and protocols.
  • Knowledge or skills in electrical or mechanical computer aided design.

Responsibilities

  • Contribute to hardware and/or software components of cyber-physical prototypes ranging from tiny autonomous systems to entire “smart” environments.
  • Test, evaluate, troubleshoot, and document cyber-physical systems to understand their strengths and weaknesses.
  • Develop capabilities to ensure the operational success of our sponsors as they employ and encounter these systems in the real world.
