About The Position

Banner Staffing Services (BSS) offers registry/per diem opportunities within Banner Health. These positions are used as needed at Banner facilities and offer team members the ability to apply for regular Banner Health opportunities as internal applicants. The role is for an experienced Cardiovascular Operating Room Surgical Technologist supporting surgical patients, physicians, and care teams. The position selects and places surgical instruments, supplies, and equipment; scrubs and provides sterile instruments, sutures, and supplies during procedures; and may assist with training and orientation of surgical technology staff and students. The technologist must be proficient in at least two surgical specialties and assist physicians with advanced cardiovascular tasks, including cardiopulmonary bypass/heart-lung machine use, cardiac assistive devices, and vascular access and interventions. The role involves working in a fast-paced, high-pressure environment. PRN opportunities are available at Banner Thunderbird Medical Center in Glendale, Banner Estrella Medical Center and Banner University Medical Center Phoenix in Phoenix, Banner Boswell Medical Center in Sun City, and Banner Desert Medical Center in Mesa, Arizona. Registry/per diem roles do not guarantee hours and do not include a medical benefits package. A post-offer occupational health physical assessment, drug screen, and background check covering employment, criminal, and education history are required.

Requirements

High school diploma or GED.
Current basic life support certification.
Surgical technologist certification.
One to two years of experience in a surgical technologist role, or three to four years in a surgical technologist role.
Registration with the State Regulatory Agency where applicable.
Ability to scrub proficiently in at least two surgical specialties.
Manual dexterity and ability to maintain professional decorum in stressful emergent situations.
Ability to be conscientious, organized, and orderly, and respond quickly to surgeon and patient needs.
Ability to stay abreast of new developments in the field.

Responsibilities

Prepare for surgical procedures by obtaining appropriate instruments and supplies, checking instrument function and case carts, troubleshooting equipment or contacting biomedical equipment staff, and planning for upcoming cases.
Anticipate the surgeon’s needs by passing instruments and retracting tissue.
Maintain competency and proficiency to scrub in at least two surgical specialties.
Apply aseptic technique and universal precautions throughout procedures.
Participate in counts of sharps, instruments, and sponges; dispose of sharps and waste appropriately; and prepare instruments for cleaning after each case.
Ensure surgeon preference cards and pick lists are accurate.
Assist with operating-room turnover, stocking and replenishing supplies, and cleaning operating rooms.
Participate in or lead training and orientation for surgical technology staff and students, as assigned.
May provide administrative or other business support to the department.
Follow safety procedures for medication labeling, specimen and sharps handling, time-outs, radiation and laser safety, infection control, and instrument assembly and disassembly.
Participate in emergency call rotation.
Assist physicians during cardiovascular procedures involving cardiopulmonary bypass/heart-lung machines, cardiac assistive devices, and vascular access and interventions.
