About The Position

The custodian is responsible for performing janitorial duties, minor maintenance and scheduled cleaning projects in order to ensure that campus buildings and facilities are maintained in a healthy, safe, and sanitary manner. The position consists of three separate tiers, each with increased responsibility, experience, and independent operation. Level I applies basic skills while developing some specialized skills in procedures, operations, techniques, tools, materials, and/or equipment appropriate to area of specialization; performs routine and/or repetitive tasks, limited decision making required; generally, works under close supervision; has no or limited experience; work is performed from within specific limits of established procedures and/or defined instructions. (0-3 years of experience). Level II applies skills and job knowledge in area of specialization; applies procedures, operations, techniques, tools, materials, and/or equipment to meet needs of area of specialization at an intermediate level of knowledge and understanding; may work on non-routine tasks, projects, and applications; resolves issues/makes working decisions within area of specialization or responsibility with minimal supervision. (minimum of 2 years of experience in the role). Level III works on varied tasks ranging from routine to complex. Applies full range of specialized skills and job knowledge; frequently adapts procedures, techniques, tools, materials, and/or equipment to meet specialized needs; performs broad and/or focused assignments under general supervision; relies on experience and judgment to plan and accomplish assigned tasks. (minimum of 4 years of experience in the role in Delta County).

Requirements

  • At least two (2) years of custodial experience is required and two (2) years of light maintenance experience is strongly desired (Level I).
  • Combination of education and experience could waive specific requirements upon hire.
  • Minimum of four (4) or more years’ experience working in commercial cleaning or at least two (2) years of custodial experience at Delta County is required (Level II).
  • Complete all duties of the previous level at an intermediate level with minimal supervision (Level II).
  • Completes special projects as assigned with minimal direction (Level II).
  • Follows the Daily and Deeps Cleaning Schedule independently without prompting (Level II).
  • Is thoroughly aware of all County building facilities and special custodial requirements of each with the ability to be assigned to locations as necessary (Level II).
  • Complete all duties of previous levels at an advanced level with only general supervision demonstrating proficiency in knowledge and performance of cleaning and basic maintenance activities throughout the County (Level III).
  • Must have a minimum of four (4) years of employment as a custodian for Delta County (Level III).
  • Must be proficient in Commercial Cleaning procedures and products (Level III).
  • Demonstrated completion of special projects with general direction is required (Level III).
  • Must have demonstrated full cleaning knowledge of all, but two (2), Delta County buildings and facilities including the Fairgrounds at an advanced level with general supervision (Level III).
  • Must have guided the complete training (including Daily, Deep, and Deep Cleaning Projects) of at least two (2) new custodian employees under general direction from the Building and Grounds Coordinator (Level III).
  • Must have demonstrated advanced competency in at least three (3) of the following areas: Specialty Hard Surface Floor Care and Operation of Specialty Hard Surface Floor Equipment, Specialty Carpeted Surface Floor Care and Operation of Specialty Hard Surface Equipment, Specialty Biohazard Area Procedures and Operating Specialty Biohazard Area Equipment, Chemical Safety Data Knowledge Training (Level III).
  • Current, valid and unrestricted Colorado Driver’s License is required within three (3) months of hire.
  • Must spend the entire time at work standing, walking, lifting heavy objects, twisting, using hands, fingers and legs, operating medium weight cleaning equipment such as floor buffers, floor scrubbers, carpet shampooers, sweeping and mopping floors, moving desks, and furniture.
  • Must do a great deal of stretching and bending, often in awkward positions.
  • Must be able to operate floor polishers, floor scrubbers, and shampooers.
  • Must be able to lift 50 pounds.
  • Must be able to travel between buildings in inclement weather conditions.
  • Must be able to mix and use chemicals.
  • Must be able to work with power equipment.
  • Must be able to work in the evening and night hours often independently.
  • Must be able to mitigate hazards through proper training, PPE, ergonomic techniques, and strict safety protocols.

Nice To Haves

  • Two (2) years of light maintenance experience is strongly desired (Level I).

Responsibilities

  • Perform custodial duties for County Buildings as assigned by the supervisor including, but not limited to, general cleaning and upkeep of public buildings, such as sweeping, mopping, vacuuming, dusting, wiping, sanitizing, restocking supplies, emptying trash, moving tables and chairs, spot cleaning soiled areas, and maintaining cleaning supply inventory.
  • Perform basic repairs and assemblies such as changing light bulbs and tubes, replacing filters, maintaining dispensers, tightening screws, maintaining equipment, reporting major repairs, and the similar.
  • Perform deep cleaning duties as assigned by the supervisor such as vent, blind, window, and fixture cleaning, shampooing carpets, and the similar as listed on the Deep Clean Weekly Schedule and the Custodial Deep Clean Project List.
  • Coordinate with the Buildings and Grounds Coordinator by telephone and/or in person to exchange information and receive special work instructions.
  • Cooperate with supervisor, co-workers and building occupants in a professional and courteous manner.
  • Utilize safety protocol, proper ergonomic mechanics, injury prevention procedures and Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) (gloves, masks, respirators, face shields, covers, etc.) to mitigate injury and hazards.
  • Effectively and properly utilize cleaning chemical training information, Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS), and exposure procedures as necessary.
  • Secure offices and buildings by ensuring all required doors are locked and secured and appropriate lights are turned off if no occupants are in the area.
  • Manage time keeping by clocking in when the shift begins, clocking out and back in for lunch period and if you leave the assigned property, and clocking out at the end of the day.
  • Take two fifteen (15) minute paid breaks and one thirty (30) minute unpaid meal break per eight-hour shift.
  • Submit Paid Time Off (PTO) requests to the Buildings and Grounds Coordinator at least two weeks prior to the requested start date.
  • Perform other similar and related job duties as assigned.
  • Serve as disaster service workers if a local disaster declaration is issued.
  • Train and guide new custodians on duties and responsibilities performing daily and deep cleaning requirements at all County facilities and buildings (Level II).
  • Perform specialty hard surface floor care utilizing industry standard processes and equipment safely and effectively (Level II).
  • Perform specialty carpeted surface floor care utilizing industry standard processes and equipment safely and effectively (Level II).
  • Look for and complete necessary cleaning and light maintenance duties without prompting (Level II).
  • Complete specialty biohazard area procedures and operate specialty biohazard area equipment (Level III).
  • Complete chemical safety data knowledge training, utilize all chemicals appropriately and lead instruction to others as necessary (Level III).
  • Perform clerical administrative duties assigned by the Buildings and Grounds Coordinator (Level III).
  • Assist with the inventory and organization of the custodial supplies and report supply needs to the Buildings and Grounds Coordinator (Level III).
