About The Position

The Custodian plays a vital role in supporting the life of the parish by ensuring the church property and facilities are maintained in a clean, safe, and welcoming condition that enables worship, rental use, community activities, and parish ministries to flourish. The Custodian ensures that the church property and its facilities are maintained in a welcoming, clean and safe condition, that property systems and other components are maintained cost-effectively in optimum working order, and that any problems with the property or facilities are promptly reported to the Parish Corporation and/or Property Committee co-chairs.

Requirements

  • Knowledge of and skill in cleaning procedures, processes, products, and equipment.
  • Knowledge of basic building maintenance processes or procedures.
  • Ability to work independently and be proactive with moderate supervision.
  • Physically fit and able to lift and carry items up to 50 lbs, work from a tall ladder, kneel, squat, and stand to perform duties.
  • Familiarity with the correct use of protective equipment.
  • Satisfy St Thomas the Apostle’s requirements for a clear Police Records Check.

Responsibilities

  • Calculate rental rates based on details provided.
  • Fulfill rental agreements by meeting renters, showing rooms, discussing furniture layout, providing cleaning instructions, explaining waste disposal, and answering logistical questions.
  • Serve as the primary contact for renters during events for problems or emergencies.
  • Perform ongoing cleaning tasks such as sweeping, vacuuming, mopping, and washing windows as needed.
  • Clean after external (paid) rentals, which may occur outside regular hours.
  • Order and/or pick up cleaning, waste disposal, and paper supplies.
  • Collect and separate garbage and recycling from washrooms, hall, and kitchen.
  • Deliver garbage and recycling waste to the curb on Sunday evenings.
  • Retrieve, clean, and wash garbage and recycling containers, returning them to their designated spots.
  • Perform lock-up duties on Sundays and Mondays, and any evening required for rentals or cleaning support.
  • Serve as a backup for the lock-up contractor.
  • Advise Wardens, Incumbent, and Parish Administrator of any serious matters and provide resolution advice.
  • Prepare rooms by arranging chairs, tables, etc., for meetings and gatherings.
  • Check all areas after use and return spaces to their normal setup.
  • Monitor compliance with fire regulations through regular inspections for hazards, testing emergency lighting, and ensuring clear access to exits and fire extinguishers.
  • Inspect and test smoke alarms and replace batteries.
  • Inspect fire extinguishers and initial their tags.
  • Undertake minor maintenance and repairs as they occur.
  • Perform planned minor maintenance and cosmetic repairs.
  • Maintain a running record of all repairs undertaken.
  • Report to the Parish’s Corporation.
  • Coordinate with the Parish Administrator and Property Committee co-chairs.
  • Participate in Property Committee meetings.
  • Liaise with campus partners as required.
