About The Position

The South Shore Regional Centre for Education (SSRCE) is seeking a Custodian for New Germany Elementary School. The SSRCE serves 59,000 residents across Lunenburg and Queens Counties, encompassing 23 schools over 5,250 square kilometres. Requirements

Course equivalent combination of training and 5 years experience looking after a building.
Thorough knowledge of effective cleaning and building maintenance practices.
Experience operating a computer.
Experience working with staff in a unionized environment.
Ability to work collaboratively with school staff.
Completion of WHMIS, first aid, scaffolding and confined space training.
Ability to lift up to 50 lbs.
Satisfactory Criminal Record / Vulnerable Sector Check and a Nova Scotia Child Abuse Register Check (within the last 3 months).

Responsibilities

Supervises custodial work, including developing specific duties for janitors, planning cleaning programs, performing daily inspections, recording absences and scheduling replacements, overseeing training of new janitors, and ensuring safe work practices and proper storage of supplies.
Maintains school building and grounds by performing daily inspections of operating systems (HVAC, water treatment, alarm, emergency), lubricating and pumping compressors and electrical motors, changing filters, replacing belts, operating EMCS for comfort and energy control, completing minor carpentry, electrical, and plumbing repairs, completing assigned cleaning duties, monitoring contracted snow removal, and submitting work orders.
Maintains stock of cleaning supplies, ensuring safe storage with MSD sheets displayed, and reordering supplies as necessary.
Works cooperatively with the School Principal and staff, reviewing maintenance and operational issues to support school programs and community use.
Complies with the Occupational Health and Safety Act and Regulations.
Performs other related duties as required.
