About The Position

The Custodian will ensure that The Salvation Army's Corps and Thrift Store facilities are clean to the highest standards and are able to function without interruption daily. This role involves performing custodial and regular maintenance of both Salvation Army properties. The Custodian is expected to represent The Salvation Army in a manner that brings glory to God and assist in carrying out the spiritual and total mission of The Chambersburg Corps in terms of community needs and ministry. Key duties include setting up and tearing down for special events/programs, maintaining cleanliness and sanitation using commercial equipment, monitoring and stocking restrooms, weekly room setup/changeover for program activities, keeping the custodial closet clean, and maintaining the outside of buildings (including daily trash pickup, weekly grass cutting, and snow removal as needed). The position also requires performing building and maintenance repairs, assisting in driving Salvation Army vehicles for supplies, and supporting Christmas efforts such as kettles. The custodian is responsible for daily walkthroughs to ensure rooms are prepared and cleaned for service, and a final pass-through for Sunday services. Additionally, they will assist with vehicle maintenance and other assigned projects or departmental responsibilities.

Requirements

  • Able to work with hand tools and small power tools as needed.
  • Able to handle various types of equipment- buffing machine, vacuum, leaf blower, lawn mower, etc.
  • Must treat all people with compassion and respect.
  • Must be able to work independently.
  • Strong interpersonal communication skills and appropriate intervention skills within The Salvation Army required
  • Must have a valid Driver’s License and be able to drive for The Salvation Army
  • Pennsylvania's Child Protective Services Law requires that all prospective employees complete the following clearance and background checks: PA Child Abuse History Clearance, PA State Police Criminal Record Check, and PA DHS Criminal Record/Fingerprint Check.
  • Completion of a Pennsylvania approved Child Abuse Recognition and Reporting Training is necessary prior to employment.
  • Must understand and support for the Mission of The Salvation Army.

Responsibilities

  • Represent The Salvation Army in a manner that brings glory to God.
  • Assist in every way requested to carry out the spiritual and total mission of The Chambersburg Corps of The Salvation Army in terms of community needs and our ministry to the people of our community.
  • Set up and tear down for special events / programs at the direction of the Facilities & Outreach Manager.
  • Maintain cleaning and sanitation techniques, while utilizing and operating commercial equipment.
  • Maintain cleanliness of building and property according to the maintenance and cleaning schedule.
  • Monitor and keep all rest rooms stocked with items needed for daily use.
  • Weekly set up and changeover of rooms as required for program activities during the week.
  • Keeping custodial closet clean and neat.
  • Keep outside of buildings properly maintained, which includes daily picking up any accumulated trash.
  • Cut grass on a weekly basis / Snow Removal, as needed
  • Performs building repairs and performs maintenance repairs, as requested by Facilities & Outreach Manager.
  • Assist in driving The Salvation Army’s vehicles for supplies, equipment or service as assigned.
  • Assist, as needed and requested, in the Christmas effort including kettles.
  • Takes pride in work and in the cleanliness of the building.
  • Responsible to make a walkthrough of the building every morning, ensuring all rooms are prepared, properly cleaned and ready to open for service.
  • Responsible to make a final pass through of the building ensuring all rooms are prepared and properly cleaned for Sunday services.
  • Assist with maintenance of vehicles, making sure all service is up to date.
  • Assist with any other projects or covering responsibilities withing other departments, as assigned by the Corps Officers or Facilities & Outreach Manager.
