About The Position

The Custodian position involves the daily cleaning and upkeep of assigned building sections and completion of various maintenance tasks. This role requires physical and cognitive abilities to perform essential job functions, including bending, twisting, pushing, pulling, sitting, and standing for extended periods. The employee must be able to lift up to 50 pounds and possess specific vision abilities for close work and focus adjustment. Requirements

  • Must be able to bend, twist, push, pull, sit, and stand for long periods of time.
  • Required to have the ability to push and/or lift up to and including 50 pounds, such as boxes, bags, equipment, etc.
  • Specific vision abilities required include close vision and the ability to adjust focus.
  • Reliable attendance and punctuality.
  • A high school diploma or equivalent.

Responsibilities

  • Daily cleaning and upkeep of assigned building sections.
  • Completion of various maintenance tasks.
  • Dusting, sweeping, mopping, cleaning glass, maintaining dispensers.
  • Climbing ladders for tasks like changing lighting fixtures, ceiling panels, and painting.
  • Crouching and maneuvering through utility tunnels.
  • Lifting and securing lunch tables.
  • Collecting, handling, and disposing of trash inside and outside.
  • Setting up and breaking down chairs, tables, risers, and other equipment for events.
  • Performing outdoor grounds maintenance, including snow removal and lawn care.
  • Operating commercial equipment such as tractors, snow throwers, and weed whips.
  • Using floor care equipment, including riding automatic scrubbers and manual swing buffers.
  • Loading and unloading supply shipments.
  • Transporting stock and supplies throughout the facility.
  • Moving furniture in and out of rooms and across the building.
  • Other duties as assigned by the principal or supervisor.
  • Identifying spills, damage, or safety hazards.
  • Ensuring proper sanitation in high-contact areas.
  • Following district-specific cleaning protocols.
  • Remembering daily, weekly, and seasonal cleaning schedules.
  • Knowing which classrooms or areas require special attention.
  • Retaining knowledge of school layout, emergency exits, and storage locations.
  • Responding quickly to unexpected messes or maintenance issues.
  • Adjusting cleaning strategies based on student activities or weather conditions.
  • Coordinating with teachers and staff to avoid disrupting learning.
  • Prioritizing tasks during limited time windows.
  • Managing multiple responsibilities across different buildings or wings.
  • Meeting deadlines for event setups.
  • Understanding instructions from school administrators or supervisors.
  • Communicating respectfully with students, teachers, and parents.
  • Reporting safety concerns or equipment issues clearly and promptly.
  • Understanding and applying MIOSHA regulations and district safety policies.
  • Reading and interpreting chemical labels and Safety Data Sheets (SDS).
  • Following protocols for handling biohazards or bodily fluids.
  • Reading work orders, cleaning logs, and signage.
  • Measuring cleaning solutions accurately.
  • Logging completed tasks or incidents in digital or paper systems.

  • The work year, salary, and fringe benefits will be consistent with the current agreement between the Board of Education and the Agreement between the Livonia Public Schools School District and the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees, AFL-CIO Local 118, Council 25.
