About The Position

Eastern Connecticut State University (ECSU) is seeking to fill several Custodian positions to work both first and second shift on its campus in Willimantic, CT. These positions are considered essential and require employees to report to duty even during inclement weather. Individuals will be responsible for maintaining the highest standards of building sanitation and cleanliness. A valid, unexpired CT driver's license is required, and slip-resistant footwear must be worn at all times.

Requirements

  • Any experience and training which would provide the knowledge, skills and abilities to perform custodial tasks and maintenance of buildings.
  • Skills in interpersonal communication, oral and written communication.
  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to operate, care for, and perform minor maintenance on tools and equipment used in daily work.
  • Ability to keep records.
  • Must have adequate physical strength, stamina, physical agility, and visual and auditory acuity, and must maintain such physical fitness as to be able to perform the duties of the class.
  • May be required to lift moderate to heavy weights.
  • May be exposed to risk of injury from equipment and/or individuals.

Nice To Haves

  • Possession of a valid, unexpired, Connecticut Driver's License.
  • Experience working in environments with students, staff and/or the general public.
  • Experience following directions, prioritizing tasks, and working independently with minimal supervision.
  • Experience performing repetitive tasks (lifting, bending and standing for extended periods of time), as well as lifting and moving equipment and supplies (typically up to 50 pounds).
  • Experience shoveling snow and ice from stairways and walkways around buildings.

Responsibilities

  • Performing custodial tasks and maintenance of areas such as dormitories, classrooms, offices, auditoriums, wards, kitchens, dining rooms, and lavatories, including outdoor areas (e.g., trash around buildings).
  • Dusting, mopping, sweeping, scrubbing, stripping, waxing, and polishing floors using appropriate equipment.
  • Washing, dusting, and polishing glass, woodwork, walls, furniture, and metal equipment.
  • Making beds.
  • Checking, marking, storing, and issuing linens, blankets, and clothing within an individual’s work area.
  • Collecting and counting soiled laundry.
  • Distributing, emptying, and sterilizing glassware, wash basins, and bedpans.
  • Sweeping walks.
  • Collecting and disposing of trash.
  • Reporting needs for repairs.
  • Performing minor maintenance.
  • Running errands.
  • Inspecting buildings for damage and reporting conditions to a supervisor.
  • Changing light bulbs and replacing fuses.
  • Lubricating or tightening door hinges, drawers, cabinets, etc.
  • Replacing ceiling or floor tiles.
  • Removing snow and ice from stairways and walkways around buildings.
  • Sanding and salting stairways and walkways.
  • Moving furniture and/or setting up classrooms.
  • Performing related duties as required.
