About The Position

The Salvation Army is dedicated to Doing the Most Good, working to holistically meet the physical, emotional, and spiritual needs of vulnerable neighbors. The mission of the maintenance department is to support the full mission of The Salvation Army by providing maintenance support for the programs of The Salvation Army Blue Island Worship and Community Center. The Custodian/Maintenance Worker will maintain a clean environment for soldiers, employees, and clients using the facility through janitorial service, minor repair of equipment, and upkeep of the facility. This role ensures the building is clean and well-maintained inside and out, including occasional pick-up/delivery of persons, items, and food/donation pickups.

Requirements

  • High School graduate or GED equivalent preferred.
  • Knowledge of basic maintenance skills and ability to perform minor repairs.
  • Valid Driver’s license/MVR clearance.
  • Ability to do moderate lifting and carrying items up and down stairs.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills using diplomacy and good judgment.
  • Demonstrated ability to use initiative and be a self starter.
  • An attention to detail.
  • A positive attitude and the ability to be flexible in light of changing job situations/priorities.
  • Willing to promote the mission of The Salvation Army.
  • Must be able to drive.

Responsibilities

  • Perform all necessary janitorial/maintenance duties, including emptying garbage bags, mopping/sweeping floors, vacuuming offices, classrooms, chapel, and hallways, dusting, cleaning and stocking restrooms, ensuring the outside area is free of debris, basic lawn care, snow removal and salt application, and washing window areas, mirrors, and door frames.
  • Inspect and notify Corps Officers concerning needs for major repair, safety, or security issues.
  • Use basic hand tools to provide minor building maintenance, minor painting, and other related maintenance activities.
  • Maintain an organized area and help keep the building clean and organized.
  • Assist with repairs and maintenance of all Salvation Army property.
  • Assist with pick-up and delivery as designated by the Corps Officers.
  • Perform regular cleaning and maintenance of vehicles.
  • Work with The Divisional Property Department on emergency property repairs.
  • Assist with inventory of supplies and informing the Office Manager to order.
  • Monitor companies (pest control, fire extinguisher, property, etc.).
  • Help with loading/unloading of donations.
  • Set up and clean up for special programs.
  • Assist with restocking the pantry when the monthly order arrives.
  • Assist with seasonal activities and assistance (Christmas, van drive, school supplies, etc.).
