About The Position

Under general supervision, leads a team of custodians and performs custodial duties in maintaining the interior and exterior of City buildings, sets up rooms or outdoor spaces for special events; may perform minor repairs; and performs related work as assigned. Works under the general supervision of the Director of General Services; as a Leadworker provides direction, training, guidance, and assistance to lower-level custodians.

Requirements

  • High School diploma or GED equivalent; AND four (4) years of custodial experience; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Must possess a valid California Class C Driver’s License.
  • Knowledge of City organization, operations, policies and procedures.
  • Knowledge of methods, materials and equipment used in custodial work.
  • Knowledge of occupational safety and health policies and procedures related to custodial work.
  • Knowledge of supervisory principles and practices.
  • Skill in operating machinery such as a vacuum sweeper, buffer, or other similarly sized equipment.
  • Skill in maintaining records and making oral and written reports.
  • Skill in following safety practices and recognizing safety hazards.
  • Skill in following written and oral instructions, particularly in handling chemicals.
  • Skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of the work.

Responsibilities

  • Provides direction, training, guidance, and assistance to lower-level custodians; coordinates daily work activities; organizes, prioritizes, and assigns work; monitors status of work, inspects completed work, and troubleshoots problem situations; assists lower-level custodians with questions/problems.
  • Cleans, sanitizes and deodorizes restrooms.
  • Sweeps and vacuums carpeting and floors using manual and power equipment.
  • Mops, scrubs, waxes, shampoos, and spot cleans carpeting and floors.
  • Empties waste cans and ashtrays.
  • Cleans woodwork, walls, and windows using common household equipment and cleaning products.
  • Sets up and breaks down for meetings and special events.
  • Sweeps sidewalks and entryways.
  • Cleans and dusts offices.
  • Performs minor maintenance work such as changing light bulbs, repairing fixtures and furniture.
  • Keeps equipment and supplies in order and requests more when needed.
  • Maintains exterior of facility, including trash pickup.
  • Performs other duties as assigned or required.
