About The Position

The Custodian II position is a second shift role responsible for the long and short-term cleaning and light maintenance of Siena school buildings and grounds. The goal is to ensure a safe, clean, and attractive learning and working environment. While the primary location is St Catherine’s High School, assistance may be needed at other Siena school locations. This role involves performing all custodial tasks in various areas of the school, including classrooms, hallways, offices, and restrooms, as well as a broad range of maintenance work. The position requires performing duties safely and in a timely manner, enforcing health and safety codes. This role reports to the Maintenance Supervisor, with input from the school Principal(s) on daily tasks, time off, and performance reviews. Additionally, the Custodian II will supervise two other night shift employees.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent training and/or experience
  • A minimum of 5 years of building services/maintenance experience in a similar environment or equivalent experience in a similar role
  • Facilities Operator Third Class License required
  • Must have successfully performed duties as a Custodian/Building Head I for a period of 5 years or equivalent experience
  • Must be able to organize multiple priorities and prioritize their own time
  • Must be able to operate hand tools, buffers & scrubbers, and power equipment and to meet the physical demands as described below
  • Must have good communication and interpersonal skills and demonstrated ability to conduct him/herself in a manner which is consistent with and supportive of Siena’s mission as well as its desire to maintain a healthy, safe, positive work environment for everyone
  • Must be able to work occasional evenings and weekends, as needed
  • Must be comfortable with computers, email and other applications for sending and receiving communications
  • Must be able to complete “Safeguarding All God’s Children” training within 90 days

Responsibilities

  • Safely perform all custodial tasks in classrooms, hallways, lobbies, washrooms, offices, cafeterias, gyms, entrances and other areas according to a regular schedule and with minimum supervision, including mopping, dusting, vacuuming, washing, sweeping, sanitizing, and snow removal.
  • Complete daily work task checklist and provide it to the Maintenance Supervisor daily, annotating any items not completed or outstanding.
  • Supervise and direct the work tasks for the assigned shift to other employees, ensuring compliance with the Employee handbook and policies.
  • Approve time off requests of night shift custodians and coordinate shift coverage to ensure completion of assigned tasks.
  • Monitor work to ensure equitable task distribution to assigned employees.
  • Provide annual evaluations and perform feedback on employees to reward outstanding behavior, discuss strategies for improvement, provide appropriate training/direction, and correct deficiencies.
  • Participate in all phases of the summer cleaning program, including stripping and waxing floors, painting, window washing, and deep cleaning, potentially at other school sites.
  • Direct the movement of furniture or equipment within the assigned building as required for various activities and as directed by the principal or supervisory chain.
  • Assist in the preparation for school activities and events, including set-up and take down, and the collecting and disposing of all trash in and around the interior of the school and surrounding property/playground areas.
  • Shovel ice and snow during the winter season and perform general grounds care.
  • Operate and maintain floor cleaning equipment and associated tools necessary for cleaning.
  • Check for and report all needs for maintenance, electrical, plumbing, structural, or other problems to the Maintenance Supervisor or Chief Operations Officer.
  • Bring immediate attention to anything which may be a health and/or safety concern to the school Principal and supervisor.
  • Regularly monitor the Siena maintenance database for maintenance and cleaning requests, evaluating all requests within 24 hours to determine urgency and extent of work requested.
  • Perform minor maintenance with minimal supervision and basic preventative maintenance of school equipment (floor scrubbers, unit ventilators, compressors, boilers, etc.) as directed by work checklists and Siena Maintenance Supervisor.
  • Report maintenance tasks requiring higher skill levels to Siena Maintenance Supervisor or Director of Operations.
  • Coordinate the procurement of cleaning supplies with the supervisor and maintain neat and orderly custodial/maintenance work areas.
  • Secure the building daily by locking/unlocking doors and activating/deactivating security alarms without supervision.
  • Communicate regularly and professionally with the Maintenance Supervisor and Chief Operations Officer on projects, special events, supplies/equipment needs, and any other support required.
  • Be occasionally on call for emergencies outside of regular work hours.
  • Escort custodial and maintenance contractors as necessary to perform work inside and outside of school grounds.
  • Represent Siena in a positive manner by interacting professionally, effectively, and appropriately with administration, teachers, students, families, outside contractors, and others.
  • Perform various custodial/maintenance duties at other Siena locations as necessary for long or short-term durations.
  • Check daily to ensure all exterior doors open and panic bolts are working properly during building occupancy hours, troubleshooting and resolving any issues, and notifying the Maintenance Supervisor if unable to resolve.
  • Keep all floors in a clean and attractive condition through regular sweeping, mopping, scrubbing, and waxing according to work checklists and building schedule.
  • Perform grounds keeping chores such as grass cutting, tree trimming, snow/ice removal on steps, sidewalks, driveways, and playground areas.
  • Make minor repairs using basic hand tools.
  • Maintain inventory of supplies, equipment, and materials on hand.
  • Respond to requests for assistance from principals, teachers, and others.
  • Actively assist with building lockdown and emergency procedures as directed.
  • Monitor condition of building, equipment, grounds, playground equipment, tools, and cleaning equipment, scheduling and/or performing security and maintenance inspections.
  • Perform preventive maintenance, repairs, and report the need for repairs to the custodial supervisor or submit a work order.
  • Monitor HVAC equipment operating condition, checking boiler rooms and equipment rooms.
  • Receive, unload, and distribute equipment, supplies, and materials.
  • Help with student drop off and release, set up and tear down cones or equipment, and ensure safe walkways.
