Department Environmental Services Job Summary The Custodian, under immediate supervision, provides cleaning, bed linen change out, floor care, moving, grounds and project services as directed by supervisor. May also perform specific interior and exterior Medical Housekeeping cleaning duties to maintain a clean and aseptic environment throughout the hospital/clinics. The Custodian may be assigned to any one of several positions to include: patient area cleaner, non-patient area cleaner, trash technician, special care unit cleaner, and/or others
Requirements
- No High School Diploma and/or No GED
- less than 1 year
- Knowledge of the kind of tools and equipment needed to do a job.
- Knowledge of safety hazards and necessary safety precautions sufficient to be able to establish a safety work environment.
- Knowledge of chemicals and equipment used to clean surface areas sufficient to be able to maintain a clean and orderly work area.
- Knowledge of proper cleaning methods.
- Knowledge of and/or ability to learn occasional hazards and safety precautions.
- Skill in understanding and following oral, illustrated, written or demonstrated instructions.
- Ability to communicate effectively.
- Ability to work within Health Department standards.
- Command of English strongly preferred.
- Formal or informal education or training which ensures the ability to read and write at a level necessary for successful job performance.
Responsibilities
- Clean building floors by sweeping, mopping, scrubbing, or vacuuming them.
- Follow procedures for the use of chemical cleaners and equipment, in order to prevent damage to finishes and fixtures.
- Change bed linens
- Gathers and empties trash and linen.
- Transports and appropriately handles trash, recycling, medical waste, linen, and other items to each designated area and maintains waste areas within regulatory standards.
- Uses floor care equipment to strip, seal, finish, and polish floors.
- Also uses floor care equipment to clean carpet and upholstery.
- Equipment includes buffers, scrubbers, burnishers, extractors and other related equipment.
- Cleans windows, glass partitions, and mirrors, using soapy water or other cleaners, sponges, and squeegees
- Mixes water and detergents or acids in containers to prepare cleaning solutions, according to specifications
