About The Position

The Custodian - Class 18 - Nights position is a 12-month (260 days) role with benefits and salary in accordance with the SEIU Local 888 collective bargaining agreement. The primary goal is to maintain a safe, comfortable, and functional environment in all Municipal buildings in a cost-effective, customer-oriented manner. This role helps the Department of Public Facilities fulfill its mission of service to residents and protects the capital investment made by the Town. The position requires immediate start and involves night shifts from Monday to Friday, 1:30 PM to 9:30 PM.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or sufficient training and experience to demonstrate knowledge and abilities.
  • Valid driver's license.
  • Successful completion of a criminal record check (CORI), Sexual Offender Registry (SORI), SAFIS fingerprinting, and a pre-placement medical exam with drug screening.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and expertise in modern cleaning methods, including basic methods for cleaning carpets, floors, restrooms, walls, furniture, and fixtures.
  • Working knowledge of cleaning chemicals, supplies, and equipment and safety practices used in custodial work.
  • Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced environment.
  • Basic computer skills, including ability to perform simple word processing, send/receive email, and access internet programs, or willingness to be trained.
  • Ability to effectively communicate verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to perform basic math, understand written procedures, write routine documents, and speak clearly.
  • Ability to understand multi-step written and oral instructions.
  • Ability to maintain an assigned school building, group of buildings, or office space in a clean, orderly, safe, and secure manner during an assigned shift.
  • Ability to use and maintain equipment such as automatic floor cleaning machines, vacuums, carpet extractors, lawn mowers, mops, brooms, shovels, snow blowers, leaf blowers, small hand tools, ladders, personnel lifts, and miscellaneous other cleaning tools and equipment.
  • Ability to learn custodial procedures, methods, and schedules.
  • Ability to use common cleaning equipment and materials in a safe and efficient manner.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain a safe and clean environment in assigned areas.
  • Perform daily cleaning tasks including detail and project cleaning.
  • Prepare facilities for daily operations, including disarming alarms, managing lights/HVAC, opening gates, and snow removal.
  • Perform snow removal operations and operate associated equipment.
  • Clean assigned areas using designated cleaning products, hand tools, and power equipment.
  • Perform scheduled duties such as sweeping, washing, waxing, polishing, dusting, and emptying waste containers.
  • Clean and disinfect restrooms and fixtures daily.
  • Maintain supplies and equipment for assigned areas.
  • Wash windows per cleaning schedule.
  • Keep floors in a clean and attractive condition.
  • Replace light bulbs and ceiling tiles as needed.
  • Perform maintenance tasks such as painting and installations.
  • Comply with local laws for trash, rubbish, and waste disposal.
  • Move furniture or equipment within buildings as required.
  • Secure facilities and grounds daily, including locking doors, arming alarms, and turning off lights.
  • Assume responsibility for opening and closing the building each day, ensuring all is secured.
  • Keep inventory of supplies and equipment and requisition replacements.
  • Check fire extinguishers for charge level and report issues.
  • Perform miscellaneous duties such as setting up tables and chairs for events.
  • Sweep walks and steps, and remove litter from grounds.
  • Maintain grounds area around the school.
  • Attend and participate in scheduled department meetings.
  • Complete daily checklists.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
